Job description

Salary: As per UA Local 787 Collective Agreement

Ambient Mechanical Ltd is seeking an experienced Senior Chiller Service Technician to join our service team. This position is intended for a highly skilled technician with advanced experience in commercial and industrial chiller systems, including troubleshooting, major service, rebuilds, commissioning, and customer support.


The successful candidate will be capable of working independently on complex equipment, supporting junior technicians, and representing the company professionally on critical service calls and major projects.


Key Responsibilities:


Perform advanced troubleshooting, service, maintenance, and repair on commercial and industrial chillers. Work on centrifugal, screw, scroll, reciprocating, magnetic bearing, and modular chiller systems. Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigerant, oil, and performance-related issues. Perform seasonal start-ups, shutdowns, operational inspections, and preventive maintenance. Complete compressor inspections, teardown support, alignment checks, oil analysis, vibration review, leak testing, evacuation, and refrigerant charging. Perform or assist with major repairs, including compressor replacements, tube inspections, eddy current testing coordination, control upgrades, motor diagnostics, and VFD or starter troubleshooting. Review chiller logs, trend data, alarm histories, and operating conditions to identify deficiencies and recommend corrective action. Support commissioning, recommissioning, and performance verification of chiller systems. Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and field support to apprentices and junior technicians. Communicate professionally with customers, property managers, engineers, contractors, and internal service teams. Prepare detailed service reports, deficiency reports, repair recommendations, and quotation support notes. Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, manufacturer procedures, safety requirements, and applicable codes. Participate in on-call rotation, emergency service, and overtime as required.

Qualifications:


Minimum 710 years of commercial HVAC service experience, with significant hands-on chiller experience. Valid 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic License required. Valid ODP certification required. Strong experience with major chiller manufacturers such as Carrier, Trane, York, Daikin, McQuay, Multistack, Smardt, Dunham Bush, or similar equipment. (Magnetic and Non-magnetic) Advanced knowledge of refrigeration cycles, compressor operation, oil management, controls, electrical systems, starters, VFDs, and hydronic systems. Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, sequence of operations, service manuals, and manufacturer literature. Strong diagnostic ability and sound judgment when working on critical equipment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Valid drivers license with a clean driving record. Strong communication, documentation, and customer service skills. Demonstrated commitment to safety, professionalism, and quality workmanship.

Preferred Experience / Assets:


Factory training from Carrier, Trane, York, Daikin, Smardt, Multistack, or other chiller manufacturers is an asset but not required Experience with centrifugal compressor overhauls, screw compressor repairs, or magnetic bearing systems. Experience with starters, soft starters, VFDs, motor testing, and control retrofits. Knowledge of building automation systems and chiller plant optimization is an asset Experience with cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, plate-and-frame systems, and hydronic troubleshooting. TSSA, pressure vessel, or pressure relief valve replacement knowledge and experience. Welding/brazing, rigging, or millwright experience considered an asset. Ability to assist with estimating, scope development, and technical review of repair quotations considered an asset

As a Senior Chiller Service Technician, you will be expected to:


Set a professional example for quality, safety, and customer service. Mentor and support apprentices and junior technicians in the field. Assist management with technical recommendations and job planning. Help identify training needs, recurring equipment issues, and service improvement opportunities. Represent the company on high-profile accounts and technically demanding service calls.
