What is a senior RF technician?

Senior RF Technicians are specialized professionals who install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair radio frequency (RF) systems and equipment. They work with devices such as transmitters, receivers, antennas, and wireless communication systems, often in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, and broadcasting. In addition to technical tasks, Senior RF Technicians may oversee junior staff, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and document maintenance activities. Their expertise is crucial in ensuring reliable wireless communication and optimal performance of RF equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior RF technician?

To thrive as a Senior RF Technician, you need a solid background in electronics, RF theory, troubleshooting, and typically an associate degree or equivalent experience in electronic technology. Familiarity with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and signal generators, as well as certifications like CET or FCC licenses, are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate testing, maintenance, and repair of RF systems, supporting reliable performance in critical communication infrastructures.

What are some common challenges senior RF technicians face when troubleshooting complex RF systems?

Senior RF Technicians often encounter challenges such as isolating intermittent faults, managing signal interference, and diagnosing issues in densely integrated systems. These problems require a deep understanding of RF theory, hands-on experience with specialized test equipment, and strong analytical skills. Collaboration with engineering and production teams is also critical, as troubleshooting can involve both hardware and software aspects. Staying updated with new RF technologies and industry standards helps in effectively resolving these complex issues.

What is the difference between Senior Rf Technician vs RF Technician?

AspectSenior RF TechnicianRF Technician
CredentialsTypically requires more experience, advanced certifications, or specialized trainingEntry to mid-level certifications, such as FCC or industry-specific licenses
Work EnvironmentOften involved in complex testing, troubleshooting, and system upgrades in labs or field sitesPrimarily responsible for installation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of RF equipment
ResponsibilitiesDesign support, troubleshooting complex issues, mentoring junior staffPerform routine testing, installation, and maintenance tasks

The main difference between a Senior RF Technician and an RF Technician lies in experience, responsibilities, and expertise. Senior RF Technicians handle more complex tasks, provide guidance, and often have advanced certifications, while RF Technicians focus on routine installation and maintenance. Both roles are essential in the wireless and telecommunications industry, but the senior position requires a higher level of skill and experience.

The Opportunity

CACI is seeking a Senior PCB Drafter with experience in RF and power Integrated Circuits (ICs) to join our design engineering team in the Sterling, Virginia area. In this role you will focus on schematic capture support, detailed PCB layout/drafting, component library development, and board documentation for RF and power electronic assemblies. You will work closely with RF and electrical engineers, translating their designs into accurate, manufacturable board layouts. This position prioritizes strong drafting and layout skills with RF/power IC experience over deep RF circuit design or electrical engineering theory. Successful candidates are detail-oriented, self-motivated, and effective at supporting multiple concurrent board efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Perform schematic capture support and detailed multi-layer PCB layout/drafting for RF and power boards containing RF and power Integrated Circuits.
  • Create, maintain, and manage component libraries and footprints specifically for RF and power ICs.
  • Execute component placement, routing, and layout updates while applying basic RF isolation, controlled-impedance, grounding, and power-distribution practices as directed by engineers.
  • Generate complete design packages including Gerbers, BOMs, assembly drawings, and fabrication documentation.
  • Collaborate daily with RF and electrical engineers to incorporate design changes and ensure layouts meet mechanical and electrical constraints.
  • Support prototype fabrication, assembly reviews, and basic board bring-up activities.
  • Review junior drafter's work for consistency, accuracy, and adherence to design rules and standards.
  • Maintain configuration-controlled drawing packages and support design documentation.
QualificationsRequired
  • Associate's degree in Electronics, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field and a minimum of 7 years of PCB drafting/layout experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Demonstrated experience performing PCB layout and drafting on boards that include RF and/or power Integrated Circuits.
  • Strong proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools for schematic capture and PCB layout (e.g., Altium Designer, Siemens PADS, OrCAD, or equivalent).
  • Experience creating and maintaining component libraries and accurate footprints for ICs.
  • Familiarity with multi-layer board construction, basic RF layout practices (isolation, shielding, impedance), and power distribution layout considerations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands-on prototyping and support environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
Desired
  • Direct experience laying out boards containing RF front-end, amplifier, mixer, or power-management ICs.
  • Experience with design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and interaction with board fabrication/assembly houses.
  • Prior experience mentoring or reviewing the work of junior draftsmen/layout technicians.
  • Familiarity with IPC standards related to PCB design and documentation.
  • Active Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance.
