Senior Director, Software Engineering

Location: Remote, US

Summary

As the Senior Director of Engineering, you'll lead multiple engineering teams responsible for critical product capabilities and foundational architecture patterns.

You will be accountable for technical direction, operational excellence, delivery predictability, and talent development across the engineering org. You'll partner closely with Product, Platform, Quality, Architecture, Security, CloudOps, and other leaders to ensure the product features are scalable, secure-by-default, and designed for rapid product innovation.

This role is ideal for a leader who can operate at two levels at once:

Strategic: Define the vision, align the roadmap, drive architectural decisions, and ensure technical sustainability.

Tactical: Deliver reliably, improve engineering efficiency, and raise the bar on reliability, security, and quality.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive the Engineering strategy and roadmap, aligned to business outcomes and product needs.
  • Partner with Product to deliver product capabilities in a sustainable and scalable manner while ensuring clear architectural foundations are established.
  • Establish and communicate priorities based on customer impact, risk reduction, cost efficiency, and developer productivity.
  • Lead execution across multiple teams and programs with a focus on predictable delivery, high quality, and measurable outcomes.
  • Build a culture of disciplined software engineering: strong planning, clear requirements, pragmatic architecture, and effective release management.
  • Ensure high-quality platform APIs, service contracts, backward compatibility, and versioning strategies.
  • Partner with SRE/CloudOps to improve incident response, postmortems, operational runbooks, and reliability engineering practices.
  • Ensure services are designed with security-by-default, compliance alignment, and strong governance.
  • Work closely with Security teams to implement best practices for secure SDLC, vulnerability management, and identity models.
  • Champion internal developer experience: self-service infrastructure, CI/CD modernization, test automation, and streamlined workflows.
  • Reduce friction and cognitive load for product teams by building tooling, documentation, and work with platform for services or abstractions that scale.
  • Ensure long-term maintainability by managing technical debt and enabling modernization.
    • Lead, coach, and grow Engineering Directors, Engineering Managers, Staff+ Engineers, and technical leaders.
    • Build a talent strategy: hiring, onboarding, retention, performance management, and succession planning.
    • Create a culture of accountability, high trust, learning, and healthy engineering rigor.
    • Partner with Product, Quality, UX/Design, Customer Success, Support, etc. teams to ensure platform implementations are understood for customer/real-world impact or needs.
    • Communicate clearly to executives and stakeholders: Roadmap status, risk, tradeoffs, and technical strategy.

    Required Education and Experience

    • 15+ years of software engineering experience with 8+ years leading multi-team engineering organizations, preferably in the CPM/ERM industry.
    • Demonstrated success leading platform, infrastructure, or foundational architecture teams in a modern SaaS/product company.
    • Strong understanding of scalable distributed systems, cloud platforms, service design, and platform operating models.
    • Experience driving engineering excellence: delivery, quality, reliability, security, and developer productivity.
    • Proven ability to hire and grow high-performing engineering leaders and teams.
    • Strong stakeholder management skills; able to align executives and teams on strategy, tradeoffs, and sequencing.


    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Experience with finance, enterprise SaaS, or highly regulated domains (SOX, SOC 2, FedRamp, GDPR).
    • Prior OneStream or financial CPM Experience.
    • Experience building internal developer platforms or large-scale platform modernization initiatives.
    • Experience in high availability systems, and global scale operations.
    • Strong technical judgment with a track record of pragmatic decisions and long-term architectural thinking.
