Data Center Senior Operating Engineer
Location: On-site in Topeka, KS (BNSF)
Compensation & Schedule
Work Schedule: Friday through Tuesday, 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM, with overtime and other assigned shifts as needed. This is a 24/7/365 facility with three shifts of operation.
Compensation: Hourly pay range of $28.84 - $37.50 per hour, plus 8% shift differential for second shift. Third shift coverage receives a 10% shift differential.
What This Role Involves
As a Senior Operating Engineer, you'll play a critical role in maintaining 100% uptime for BNSF's data center and occupied high-rise facility. This position requires demonstrated technical expertise in one primary craft area-Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations-along with multi-skilled capabilities across other systems. You'll operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment across all critical infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and reliability of essential systems.
Core Responsibilities
Maintenance & Technical Operations
Maintain, monitor, and repair Mechanical, Plumbing, Structural, Fire/Life Safety, and Control systems to meet or exceed applicable standards. Oversee facility services, preventative maintenance programs, purchasing, inventory control, and contracted maintenance coordination. Equipment maintenance includes routine cleaning, inspection, calibration, and parts replacement to keep HVAC systems and associated equipment performing at peak levels.
Safety & Compliance
Record equipment readings and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation. Maintain a clean, safe workplace while complying with departmental policies for hazardous materials storage, usage, and disposal. Conduct periodic tool and instrument inventory checks, and monitor quality and pricing of contractor work. Identify potential hazards and recommend elimination methods. Maintain compliance with State, County, and City ordinances, codes, and laws. Complete all required safety training and actively participate in the Good Catch/Near Miss program.
Administrative Duties
Generate monthly reports for the Chief Engineer and develop methods of procedure for critical equipment. Complete annual employee review processes and escalate problems to the Chief Engineer promptly. Attend work and safety meetings as required.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
This role demands physical capability and comfort working in challenging environments. Requirements include lifting up to 80 lbs, working from heights, and frequently climbing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, and working overhead. You'll work in extreme temperatures and climb ladders up to 30 feet while carrying a 20 lb tool bag (ladders have a 300 lb weight limit). Availability for call-in work is required.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC
  • Experience working in data center or raised floor environments
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • All licenses required by authority having jurisdiction

Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep expertise in a specific craft area: Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations, or Water/Air-Cooled Chiller Operations
  • Familiarity with building automation systems, power management systems, and fire/life safety systems
