Job description


The Senior Engineer will support Con Edisons Protective Relay Strategy Implementation (PRSI) team, contributing to strategic initiatives focused on modernizing and standardizing Protection and Control (P&C) systems. This role is responsible for developing forward looking relay protection designs that integrate advanced technologies to enhance system reliability, resiliency, and support the clean energy transition. The position works closely with crossfunctional stakeholders in a collaborative environment that promotes technical excellence, innovation, and knowledge sharing across Con Edisons unique electric system.
This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop, test, implement, and maintain Protection and Control (P&C) standards, including philosophy documents, setting guidelines, calculation templates, configuration files, drawings, procedures, and training on standards.
  • Research industry best practices and emerging technologies to continuously improve and modernize relay protection and controls standards.
  • Perform engineering analyses and evaluations to assess new hardware and software solutions and support the deployment of protection system upgrade programs.
  • Support the Protective Relay Strategy Implementation (PRSI) team in executing new strategies, initiatives, and processes that enhance the design, operation, and reliability of P&C systems.
  • Manage and oversee vendor and contractor technical performance, including review of designs, deliverables, and field implementations.
  • Maintain effective communication with stakeholders to implement relay protection standards, gather feedback, and manage expectations across organizations.
  • Perform technical reviews of relay protection scopes and designs to ensure alignment with approved standards and system requirements.
  • Apply technical and analytical skills to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex relay protection issues, recommending effective engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Engineers and Associate Engineers within the group.
  • Deliver technical and safetyrelated presentations to engineering teams, management, and executive leadership as required.

Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 8 years of engineering work experience. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines, required. or
  • Master's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 6 years of engineering work experience. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines, required.
Relevant Work Experience
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience in relay protection and/or control systems engineering disciplines, required.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to champion change, and the capacity to influence others to improve management processes, required.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, required.
  • Experience with microprocessor relay platforms and related configuration software, required.
  • Working knowledge of IEC61850, preferred.
  • Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF and other organizations on relay applications, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Sit or stand to use a keyboard, mouse, and computer for the duration of the workday
  • Stand to use/operate office equipment for the duration of the workday
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to travel throughout the company service territory and work at company locations as needed.
  • Ability to wear the required PPE as needed.
  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor conditions, and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in power plants and high voltage substations.
