Job description

SummaryΒ 

QuEra is building its next-generation quantum computer in Boston: the first fault-tolerant, universal quantum computer at a scale where commercially useful applications become possible. This is the scientific,Β technologicalΒ and commercial frontier - and thisΒ Senior Quantum EngineerΒ role sits at the center of it.Β 

You will join the Quantum Computing ServicesΒ teamΒ early in this newΒ machine'sΒ life,Β learnΒ QuEra'sΒ technologyΒ platformΒ and theΒ specificΒ system from the ground up, and take on increasing ownershipΒ of theΒ QPU, driving it towards a product.Β You willΒ ultimately beΒ involved inΒ launching the product,Β andΒ in theΒ continued operation of anΒ internally-facingΒ andΒ externally-facingΒ (commercial)Β quantum computing serviceΒ with theΒ systemΒ at its core.Β 

YourΒ mandateΒ in the first phase of the machine's lifecycleΒ is systemΒ integration: workingΒ onΒ QuEra'sΒ machine build task forceΒ andΒ interfacing withΒ internal and externalΒ engineering teams to corral and integrate the subsystemsΒ they deliver.Β 

In the second phase of the machine's lifecycle, your mandate isΒ delivering,Β then sustaining,Β a product and service:Β helping build anΒ operations team andΒ ensuringΒ the successfulΒ delivery of value to customers. You will be working closely with software teams to build outΒ and integrate the software stack that enables programmability of the quantum computer,Β with product and commercial teams to defineΒ the product and service, and with applications and solutions teams to collaborate with go-to-market partners.Β 

Across these phases you will be expected to:Β 

  • Integrate and test new hardware and software features and subsystems, driven by technological developments, customerΒ needsΒ and market opportunities.Β 
  • Take growing responsibility for overall operations -Β optimizing forΒ performance, reliability,Β uptimeΒ and runningΒ cost.Β 
  • Build and enable a team of operators so that the machine can serve as the dependable backbone of a commercial service.Β 
  • Support users andΒ customers, andΒ translate their needs into the machine's roadmap.Β 

QualificationsΒ 

  • A Ph.D. in experimental AMO physics or a related field, with 6+ years of hands-on experience building orΒ operatingΒ a neutral-atom or trapped-ion system (as part of theΒ Ph.D.Β or otherwise).Β 
  • Strong communicationΒ and collaboration skills, and a real interest in working across multidisciplinary teams - integrating their work into a system and rallying the support it needs.Β 
  • Strong interest in working with customers and end users to understand their needs and translate them intoΒ features,Β ultimatelyΒ deliveringΒ valueΒ for the market.Β 
  • Software skills, including programming languages and a basic understanding of softwareΒ architectures.Β 
  • Familiarity with quantum error correction and fault-tolerant architectures is a plus.Β 
  • Familiarity with modern AI workflows for automation is a plus.Β 
  • Success in research, asΒ evidencedΒ by peer-reviewed publications and/or scientific talks and other contributions.Β 
  • A willingness to provide on-call support for machine and service operations.Β 
  • Excitement to work at the scientific,Β technologicalΒ and commercial frontier of quantum computing, and the drive to grow intoΒ increasingΒ ownership of a flagship system.
