Job description

ThriftBooks is the world's largest used book retailer! We believe in a workplace where respect for our employees matters, where promoting from within is how we grow, and where safety comes first in all our decisions and planning. At ThriftBooks, your work will help get inexpensive books into the hands of people who need them instead of going into landfill. We strive to create a friendly work environment with high standards of performance and rewards for excellence. We started out small and remember that encouraging people to do their best is how we expanded to our current scale.

If you want to learn about the intersection of technology, innovation, and good old-fashioned teamwork, we might be a good fit for you. Wherever you start in the company, our hope is that it is a launching point to higher achievement. At ThriftBooks, your success is up to you.

We are looking for a Senior Analytics Engineer to build data models that enable analytics and decision-making across ThriftBooks. You will make data easy to discover, understand, and trust. Working closely with business analysts, data scientists and engineers, you’ll build the analytics foundation that supports reporting, experimentation, and operational decision making.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Use dbt to deliver well-defined, transformed, tested, documented, and code-reviewed data sets that enable business analysts to answer questions without reinventing business logic.
  • Improve data quality through debugging, testing, monitoring, documentation, and process improvements that balance performance, maintainability, and business needs
  • Work closely with business partners to understand business processes, define metrics, anticipate future needs, and translate ambiguous questions into scalable solutions.
  • Promote analytics engineering best practices through thoughtful solution design, code review and collaboration. Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Use off-the-shelf tools like Fivetran and Stitch for data ingestion

TRAVEL: This role involves limited travel for collaboration and professional development (approximately 10 days per year).

LOCATION: We find that some in-person time supports our digital work. This is a hybrid role based out of our Tukwila, Washington corporate office.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Experience building production analytics data models in dbt on large data sets.
  • Experienced in data warehousing (ideally Snowflake) and BI visualization (we use Mode).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead technical projects from ambiguous requirements to production-ready solutions
  • Experience collaborating with software engineers and business partners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Nice to have:
    • Experience with query optimization and performance tuning in Snowflake

Competencies We’re Looking For

  • Curiosity and Initiative: You are eager to learn the business so that you can help use data to drive impactful decisions across teams. You proactively identify opportunities to improve data quality, engineering practices, and team processes. You take ownership from problem identification through implementation.
  • Technical Skills and Problem Solving: You enjoy breaking down complex problems, debugging systematically, and making sound engineering tradeoffs. You think beyond the immediate request to build solutions that are reusable, reliable, and easy to maintain.
  • Collaboration and communication: Experience communicating technical topics to non-technical audiences, translating business needs into technical implementations, and liaising between Business, Engineering, and Analytics. You proactively share progress, raise risks early, and explain technical decisions. You can work in a team to get things done.
  • Engineering Judgement: You apply design thinking by exploring the underlying need, generating multiple approaches, and validating that your solution solves the problem. You consider tradeoffs – scale, maintainability, performance. You welcome feedback, encourage technical discussions, make decisions based on evidence, and see the value in collaborative problem solving.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT HERE:

  • Annual 10% bonus incentive
  • Competitive compensation package
  • Earn Paid Time Off at Accrual Rate of 15-days per year
  • Six Paid Holidays per calendar year
  • Medical & Vision Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Company paid STD/LTD
  • Company paid Life Insurance
  • 401k match program
  • Professional development & growth opportunities
  • Work with nice, fun people
  • FREE BOOKS!

BASE SALARY:

$112,000 -$168,000/yr. This range reflects the good-faith hiring base salary range for this position. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications such as skills, experience, and education/training.
