Senior Production Accountant information

What does a senior production accountant do?

A Senior Production Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of a film, television, or media production. They oversee budgeting, cost tracking, payroll, and financial reporting throughout the production process. Their work ensures that productions stay within budget, comply with union and legal requirements, and that all expenses and revenues are accurately recorded. Senior Production Accountants also supervise junior accounting staff and work closely with producers and production managers to provide financial insights and recommendations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior production accountant?

To thrive as a Senior Production Accountant, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and cost control, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with production accounting software (such as PSL, SmartAccounting, or EP) and proficiency in Excel are essential, and certification as a CPA can be advantageous. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex budgets and collaborating with production teams. These skills ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and smooth operations in fast-paced production environments.

How does a senior production accountant typically collaborate with production teams during a film or television project?

A Senior Production Accountant works closely with producers, line producers, and department heads to manage budgets, track expenses, and ensure financial compliance throughout a project. They attend regular production meetings to stay informed about schedule changes or unforeseen costs, and provide financial reports to keep the team updated. This role often involves problem-solving as unexpected financial challenges arise, and requires clear communication to balance creative needs with budget constraints.
