Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Process Engineer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and project planning for complex tasks related to manufacturing of several new products in development.
The Process Development Team (PDT) is responsible for managing the implementation and on-going support of smart factory and other automated solutions within Garmin's global operations group. These solutions are designed to increase operational efficiencies, drive higher standards of quality and ensure our processes exceed the expectations of our customers.
Essential Functions
  • Research and development of new, cutting-edge automation concepts
  • Apply knowledge of production and operations processes to overall design
  • Test, validate and integrate equipment components into production environments
  • Model moderately complex parts and assemblies in 3D CAD software
  • Interact with product design engineers to incorporate Design for Manufacturability principles
  • Design and develop basic software applications
  • Independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Interact with automation design team to ensure mechanical and electrical feasibility
  • Interface with outside teams and individuals to ensure all solutions comply with product design specifications
  • Project manage and collaborate with fellow project stakeholders
  • Conduct training for equipment operators and maintenance technicians
  • Troubleshoot, support and continuously improve existing automated solutions
  • Serves in technical leadership capacity responsible for project planning and makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of project goals/objectives for multiple new products in development
  • Attends ECO Meetings as needed and serves as a member of the Material Review Board
  • Provides manufacturing cost estimates to engineering for PDP
  • Recognizes need for new technology in factory and research additional technology improvements
  • Analyzes data to predict possible quality trends and implement mitigation
  • Evaluates equipment for new processes and designs custom equipment for Garmin specific applications
  • Participates in project leadership and/or program planning including providing technical input to product and process development plans and concept documents including operational costs
  • Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
  • Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Process Engineers (1 & 2)
  • Contributes to advanced technical research on new processes and technologies
  • Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Demonstrates good judgment in setting schedules/risk taking
  • Offers many suggestions to improves processes and authors new procedures as appropriate
  • Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques
  • Cleanliness zone area requirements: This position requires Garmin provided personal protective equipment including SD shoes (Static Dissipative Footwear) to be always worn for an entire shift to minimize the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and meet specified standards.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrates proficiency and full understanding of engineering and operations principles and processes
  • Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment

Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Previous experience with Electrical panel design, PLC and HMI programming, controls and vision systems, and VB/VB.net/C# programming
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Experience using 2D and 3D CAD design software (AutoCAD, Solidworks)
  • Design experience with fixturing, pneumatics, sensors and safety controls
  • Working knowledge of modern machining and rapid prototyping capabilities
  • Experience programming industrial and/or collaborative robots
  • End effecter design experience in 3D modeling software
  • Experience integrating controls and I/O into robot controller
  • Collaboration experience with other design groups and product owners to ensure manufacturability using automation
