What does a senior process engineer do?

A Senior Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing processes within manufacturing or production environments. They analyze workflows, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements to increase efficiency, safety, and product quality. Senior Process Engineers often lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure operational excellence. Their expertise is vital in industries like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and food processing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior process engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Process Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or process engineering, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Expertise in process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), Six Sigma or Lean certifications, and familiarity with process control systems are highly valued. Outstanding analytical abilities, leadership, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for optimizing processes, ensuring safety and compliance, and leading teams to achieve operational excellence.

What are some common challenges senior process engineers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Senior Process Engineers often collaborate with professionals from various departments, such as operations, quality, and maintenance. A common challenge is aligning diverse priorities and communication styles to achieve shared project goals. Successfully managing these differences requires strong interpersonal and project management skills, as well as the ability to translate technical concepts for non-engineering colleagues. Regular meetings and clear documentation can help ensure everyone stays informed and engaged throughout the process.

Job description

Senior Process Engineer

Location: Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver, with travel to Anchorage, the Donlin Gold Project site, and other project locations as required

Donlin Gold LLC is seeking an experienced Senior Process Engineer to support the design, development, optimization, and implementation of mineral processing systems for one of the world's largest undeveloped gold deposits. This role is critical to advancing the Donlin Gold Project from detailed engineering through construction, commissioning, and operational readiness while ensuring process systems are safe, reliable, efficient, and capable of meeting long-term production objectives.

Working closely with Engineering, Construction, Procurement, Operations, Project Controls, and the EPCM contractor, the Senior Process Engineer will provide technical expertise in mineral processing, metallurgical performance, process design, and operational optimization. The successful candidate will play an important role in delivering practical and robust solutions that address the unique challenges of a large-scale, remote, cold-climate mining operation.

What You'll Do

  • Support the development, review, and optimization of process flowsheets for crushing, grinding, flotation, pressure oxidation (POX), leaching, tailings, and associated processing systems.
  • Review EPCM engineering deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, data sheets, and engineering calculations.
  • Develop, validate, and maintain mass balances, energy balances, process models, and process design criteria.
  • Evaluate process design alternatives and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, operability, constructability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support equipment selection, equipment sizing, vendor evaluations, and procurement activities.
  • Participate in HAZOP studies, design reviews, risk assessments, and other process safety initiatives.
  • Analyze metallurgical test work and operating data to validate design assumptions and support process optimization initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve metallurgical recovery, throughput, process efficiency, and overall plant performance.
  • Support development of operating philosophies, commissioning plans, process control strategies, and operating procedures.
  • Troubleshoot complex process and metallurgical issues during engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, environmental, construction, and operations teams to ensure process requirements are fully integrated into project execution plans.
  • Support installation, commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.
  • Assist with performance testing programs and verification of process system functionality and design performance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental, health, safety, and company standards.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the project.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
  • Minimum of 7 to 12 years of progressively responsible experience in process engineering, metallurgy, mineral processing, or related engineering roles.
  • Experience supporting mining, mineral processing, industrial, or other large capital projects.
  • Experience working within EPCM environments and multidisciplinary engineering teams preferred.
  • Experience with pressure oxidation (POX), refractory gold processing, or other complex metallurgical operations preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration or eligibility for registration is preferred.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in remote, northern, or cold-climate project environments is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mineral processing systems, metallurgical principles, and process engineering practices.
  • Proficiency with process simulation and metallurgical software such as METSIM, HSC, or similar tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report preparation and presentation development.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and engineering document management systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic project environment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Why Donlin Gold?
