What is a senior postdoc?

A Senior Postdoc is an experienced postdoctoral researcher who has completed several years of postdoctoral training after earning a PhD. They typically take on greater responsibilities than junior postdocs, such as leading research projects, mentoring students, and contributing significantly to grant writing and publications. Senior Postdocs may also assist in supervising lab operations and may be preparing for independent academic or industry positions. This role often serves as a bridge between postdoctoral work and more senior roles like principal investigator or faculty positions.

What opportunities for independent research and mentorship are typically available to senior postdocs?

Senior Postdocs often have increased autonomy to design and lead their own research projects, building on the skills acquired during earlier postdoctoral training. In addition to conducting advanced experiments, they are frequently involved in mentoring junior lab members, such as graduate students and newer postdocs, which helps develop leadership skills. Many institutions encourage Senior Postdocs to apply for independent funding and to present their work at conferences, preparing them for future faculty or industry leadership roles. This combination of research independence and mentorship experience is key for career advancement in academia or research-intensive positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Postdoc, you need advanced research expertise in your field, a PhD, and a strong record of peer-reviewed publications. Familiarity with specialized laboratory techniques, data analysis software, and grant-writing platforms is typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you mentor junior researchers and collaborate across teams. These competencies are crucial for advancing research projects, securing funding, and building a professional academic profile.

Job description

The Biology Department at Carleton College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in Animal Physiology beginning September 1, 2027. We expect to make an appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research with undergraduate students in a liberal arts environment. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to inclusive excellence in their teaching. We seek applicants who are dedicated to furthering the College's goals of closing equity gaps and providing a safe learning environment for all students. A completed Ph.D. in biology or a related field with postdoctoral experience is preferred, but applicants who will complete their Ph.D. by June 2027 will be considered. Members of groups traditionally underrepresented in Biology are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position will involve teaching five courses per year within our trimester system, including Human Physiology and Lab, and regular contributions to Energy Flow in Biological Systems (BIOL126), which is one of our introductory courses. The successful candidate will also develop an upper-level seminar related to their areas of expertise and research strengths. All laboratory courses benefit from the support of skilled technical staff.

Biology faculty are expected to develop an active research program with Carleton undergraduates that contributes to their sub-field. The College offers support for faculty research programs, including student stipends and support for grant writing. In addition, support for all aspects of faculty work is provided by College-wide and department mentoring programs, cohort activities for new faculty, Provost's Office support, and extensive optional programming by our Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a curious and enthusiastic student body of approximately 2,000 undergraduates. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming, supportive, and diverse community, including meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all students. Of our domestic students, 32% identify as people of color; an additional 11% of students come from outside the United States. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton College is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, within easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.

The Biology Department is composed of 11 tenured and tenure-track faculty representing a variety of areas of research and teaching expertise, three senior lecturers who develop the introductory biology labs and offer courses in the department, two technical staff supporting laboratory teaching and research, and an administrative assistant. We teach an engaged group of students, with approximately 75 Biology majors graduating each year, many of whom work for the department in a variety of teaching support roles. Our department offers many opportunities for student engagement through mentored research, a weekly seminar series, and a PEER mentorship program that works closely with faculty and staff to coordinate department events and efforts toward creating a more inclusive community. Department members contribute to FOCUS, a curriculum-based cohort program for students interested in science and math who come from groups historically underrepresented in STEM fields. We are housed in Hulings Hall which is part of Carleton's Integrated Science Center, with state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories and equipment.
