Job description

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Ph.D. Program in Philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a scholar at the level of Associate Professor with tenure who has achieved international standing through a substantial research record. The area of specialization is Logic. Additional secondary and tertiary areas of significant specialization are welcome. The Ph.D. Program in Philosophy is a major center for intellectual exchange and graduate training in the heart of New York City. The Program is ranked at the top of graduate programs in North America in areas that include logic, philosophy of art, and philosophy of mind. The Program also has deep ties with the Graduate Center's Saul Kripke Center, with which the successful applicant will hold a strong affiliation. As with other Ph.D. programs housed in the Graduate Center, the Philosophy Program features a small cohort of central-line CUNY faculty members who teach full time in the program and a much larger group of consortial faculty members who teach and advise students at the Graduate Center in addition to holding primary appointments at other colleges within the CUNY system. This arrangement provides our students with access to unparalleled breadth and depth in field coverage and approaches to scholarship, and enables the department to select the most accomplished researchers from the philosophers who teach at eleven senior colleges within CUNY.
This position is expected to begin in Fall 2026. The Associate Professor will report to the Executive Officer of the Ph.D. Program in Philosophy.
About the Graduate Center:

With over 35 doctoral and master's programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center's commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.
The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni who, in turn, teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City's intellectual and cultural life.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
A preferred candidate should have:
• Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related discipline.
• Substantial research record.
• Ability to teach graduate courses and supervise M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations.
• Ability to mentor and train graduate students.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
