What is a senior PCB designer?

Senior PCB Designers are experienced professionals who specialize in creating and optimizing the layouts of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for electronic devices. They are responsible for transforming electronic schematics into physical board designs, ensuring manufacturability, signal integrity, and compliance with industry standards. Senior PCB Designers often lead design projects, mentor junior team members, and collaborate with engineers to resolve complex design challenges. Their expertise is critical for developing reliable and high-performance electronic products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior PCB designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior PCB Designer, you need expertise in electronic circuit design, PCB layout, and a strong understanding of industry standards, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of manufacturing processes are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure design accuracy and smooth collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial for producing reliable, manufacturable PCBs that meet technical requirements and project deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by senior PCB designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Senior PCB Designers often work closely with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams to ensure that layouts meet both functional and production requirements. One common challenge is balancing the electrical performance needs with manufacturability and cost constraints, which may require negotiation and creative problem-solving. Additionally, ensuring timely communication of design changes and managing feedback from multiple stakeholders can be demanding but is critical for keeping projects on schedule and within specifications.

What is the difference between Senior Pcb Designer vs Pcb Designer?

AspectSenior Pcb DesignerPcb Designer
Required CredentialsTypically requires 5+ years experience, advanced CAD skills, and industry certificationsEntry to mid-level experience, basic CAD skills, and relevant education
Work EnvironmentDesign teams in electronics manufacturing, R&D labs, or engineering firmsDesign departments in electronics companies or contract design services
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across high-tech, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics industriesCommon in electronics manufacturing and product development sectors

The main difference between a Senior Pcb Designer and a Pcb Designer lies in experience, expertise, and responsibilities. Senior Pcb Designers typically have more years of experience, advanced skills, and often lead complex projects, whereas Pcb Designers are usually at an entry or mid-level stage focusing on standard design tasks.

Job description

Important: This position requires on-site work in Morrisville, North Carolina. Remote work is not available.

We are not accepting submissions from third-party staffing vendors and cannot consider C2C arrangements.

Company Overview

Our client is an innovative technology company developing advanced portable and wearable monitoring systems. Its multidisciplinary engineering and scientific teams work together to create compact, battery-powered products that combine embedded electronics, sensing technologies, and data-driven capabilities.

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Electrical Engineer to support the development and refinement of embedded hardware across a growing product portfolio. This contract position will focus heavily on new PCB bring-up, laboratory troubleshooting, circuit development, and hardware integration for compact, battery-operated devices.

The ideal candidate has successfully taken multiple embedded products from initial board power-up through functional hardware. This individual should be comfortable diagnosing complex issues involving power, analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuitry and collaborating closely with firmware, mechanical, software, and scientific team members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform first-power-on activities and bring up newly developed prototype PCBs.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues in battery-powered embedded systems.
  • Use laboratory equipment to isolate faults across power, analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
  • Develop new circuits and electronic subsystems from initial concept through functional hardware.
  • Evaluate development kits and create breakout or test boards to validate new components before full product integration.
  • Review and update schematics, component selections, and PCB layouts.
  • Support the design and integration of miniaturized electronics for portable and wearable products.
  • Work with firmware and software engineers to troubleshoot hardware and embedded software interactions.
  • Measure, characterize, and improve power consumption and battery performance.
  • Contribute to battery-management and low-power design decisions.
  • Coordinate technical activities with PCB fabrication partners and contract manufacturers.
  • Document test results, design changes, technical findings, and recommended solutions.
  • Clearly communicate progress, risks, and unresolved issues to the engineering team.
  • Report to the manager responsible for electrical engineering research and development.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • At least five years of hands-on electrical engineering experience.
  • Significant experience developing battery-powered embedded, portable, or wearable systems.
  • Demonstrated success bringing new PCB designs from initial power-on through a fully functioning system.
  • Strong laboratory debugging and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Experience designing and integrating compact or miniaturized electronics.
  • Practical knowledge of mixed-signal circuit design.
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB development.
  • Ability to interpret technical data, document findings, and communicate solutions clearly.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working within cross-functional product-development teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing original circuits and subsystems from concept through working hardware.
  • Experience assessing development kits and creating test or breakout boards for new integrated circuits.
  • Ability to read and modify embedded C code when troubleshooting hardware and firmware integration.
  • Experience with rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCB designs.
  • Familiarity with Bluetooth Low Energy microcontrollers, including the Nordic nRF family or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of battery-management systems, charging circuitry, and low-power design techniques.
  • Experience working directly with PCB fabricators and electronics contract manufacturers.
  • Background developing electronics for wearable, medical, sensing, or other highly compact products.
