What is a contract 3D designer?

Contract 3D Designers are professionals who create three-dimensional visualizations, models, or animations for clients on a contract or freelance basis. They typically work on a variety of projects, such as product prototypes, architectural renderings, video game assets, or marketing materials. Instead of being full-time employees, contract 3D designers are hired for specific projects or time periods, offering flexibility to both themselves and their clients. Their work often involves using specialized software like Blender, 3ds Max, or Maya to bring ideas to life digitally. The demand for contract 3D designers spans industries like entertainment, architecture, advertising, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between Contract 3D Designer vs 3D Artist?

Industry UsageArchitecture, product design, advertising, gamingEntertainment, gaming, film, advertising
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on contractual work, design skills, project scopeFocus on artistic ability, portfolio, creative style

While both roles involve creating 3D visuals, a Contract 3D Designer typically works on specific projects for clients, emphasizing design and technical skills within a contractual framework. A 3D Artist often focuses on artistic expression, creating visuals for entertainment or media. The choice depends on whether the emphasis is on design execution or artistic creation.

What are some common challenges contract 3D designers face when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract 3D Designers often juggle several projects at once, each with unique requirements and deadlines. Balancing client expectations, adapting to different design styles, and managing overlapping timelines can be challenging. Clear communication, effective time management, and setting realistic milestones are essential for success. Additionally, Contract 3D Designers frequently need to quickly learn new workflows or software based on client needs, making adaptability a valuable asset.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract 3D designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract 3D Designer, you need strong 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization skills, typically backed by a degree in design, architecture, or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Blender, Maya, or SketchUp, and familiarity with rendering engines like V-Ray or Unreal Engine, are essential. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication help you interpret client needs and collaborate remotely with diverse teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, on-time design solutions that meet client specifications in a competitive, project-based environment.

Mechanical CAD Designer / 3D Machine Design Specialist

Voxel Innovations, Inc.

Knightdale, NC โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Job description

About Voxel
Voxel Innovations unlocks next-generation performance through Electrochemical Machining (ECM), including pulsed and hybrid variants, to precisely shape specialty metal alloys for aerospace, energy, industrial, semiconductor, and medical customers.
Our team owns the full technology lifecycle under one roof: chemistry, machine design, tooling, process development, production, inspection, and continuous improvement. We are a small, growing company with high ownership. We think like engineers, chase root causes, and move quickly from R&D into real production.
The Role
Voxel is looking for a highly skilled Mechanical CAD Designer / 3D Machine Design Specialist to help us design, model, document, and improve the custom machines, tooling, fixtures, and fluid-handling systems used in our advanced manufacturing processes.
This is primarily a 3D modeling and design documentation role, using Onshape as your primary CAD system. You will work closely with design engineers, process engineers, machinists, technicians, and vendors to turn complex concepts into buildable, manufacturable, serviceable systems.
Voxel builds specialized manufacturing equipment that does not exist off the shelf. Better CAD models, cleaner drawings, smarter assemblies, and more disciplined BOMs help us build machines faster, reduce mistakes, improve reliability, and make each generation of equipment better than the last.

About You
You are not just someone who can draw a part. You care whether the design works in the real world.
You think about how a part will be made, inspected, assembled, installed, maintained, and improved. You like clean CAD structure, clear drawings, practical details, and designs that make life easier for the people who build and use them.
You are comfortable working through ambiguity, asking good questions, and collaborating closely with engineers and shop-floor team members. You take pride in turning complex ideas into hardware that works.
You align with Voxel’s Core Values: Expect Excellence, Do Right By Others, Always Getting Better, What Would Happen If…

Job Description

  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models of machines, tooling, fixtures, and fluid-handling systems using Onshape.
  • Develop complex mechanical assemblies using custom-designed parts and off-the-shelf components.
  • Create production-ready drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, and manufacturing notes.
  • Work with design engineers to turn concepts, sketches, and layouts into detailed models and drawing packages.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide practical feedback on manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, cost, and reliability.
  • Manage CAD structure, configurations, revisions, releases, and bills of materials for large assemblies.
  • Communicate with vendors to source components, resolve fabrication questions, and support production.
  • Support hands-on assembly, measurement, troubleshooting, or testing when design feedback is needed.
  • Help improve Voxel’s CAD standards, drawing practices, design libraries, and machine design workflows.
Qualifications
  • Strong experience creating detailed 3D CAD models of mechanical systems, machinery, tooling, automation equipment, or other complex assemblies.
  • High proficiency with parametric 3D CAD. Onshape experience is strongly preferred, and heavy Onshape use will be required.
  • Ability to create production-ready drawings for machined, fabricated, sheet metal, cast, and assembled components.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and the ability to apply tolerances based on function, manufacturability, and inspection needs.
  • Practical understanding of how parts are machined, fabricated, inspected, assembled, and maintained.
  • Experience working with large assemblies, purchased components, part numbers, revisions, and bills of materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and a bias toward clean, organized, maintainable CAD models.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers, machinists, technicians, and vendors in a fast-moving environment.
  • Engineering, mechanical design, industrial design, or manufacturing education is helpful but not required. Demonstrated skill and relevant experience matter most.
  • MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Due to U.S. government contract requirements, all employees must be either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident with a valid I-551 card (green card). Work Visas are not acceptable. Employment eligibility will be verified as part of the hiring process.
  • Submittal of a cover letter describing why you are interested in working at Voxel and our mission.
Why Join Voxel?
We invest in our people. As a new hire, you will work closely with our team to master Voxel’s proprietary electrochemical manufacturing processes. We value curiosity and technical aptitude; we provide the hands-on environment and mentorship necessary to build expertise in advanced manufacturing systems that aren't found anywhere else.
  • Real Impact: You are building tangible products for the aerospace, medical, and energy industries. You see the direct result of your work.
  • Innovation-Driven Culture: We align with our core values: Expect Excellence, Do Right By Others, Always Getting Better, and What Would Happen If…
  • Comprehensive Support: We offer competitive benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement, and paid time off to ensure you and your family are supported.
Voxel Innovations Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. The above job description does not constitute a promise or guarantee of employment.
