What is a senior PCB design engineer?

Senior PCB Design Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing and developing printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create detailed layouts, select appropriate materials, and ensure the designs meet electrical and mechanical requirements. Their role also includes collaborating with other engineers, reviewing designs for manufacturability, and troubleshooting issues during prototyping and production. Senior PCB Design Engineers typically have several years of experience and expertise in layout software, industry standards, and electronic components.

What are some common challenges faced by senior PCB design engineers when working on complex multi-layer boards?

Senior PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing high-speed signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and ensuring proper power distribution across multiple layers. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—like hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing specialists—is critical to address layout constraints and manufacturability issues early in the process. Staying updated on evolving design tools and standards is also important, as is balancing tight project deadlines with the need for meticulous design verification and testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior PCB design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior PCB Design Engineer, you need advanced expertise in PCB layout, schematic capture, circuit analysis, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, and familiarity with industry standards (IPC, ISO) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding engineers apart in this role. These skills ensure robust, manufacturable designs that meet technical requirements and facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Senior Pcb Design Engineer vs Pcb Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Pcb Design EngineerPcb Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; experience in PCB design; proficiency in CAD toolsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; entry to mid-level experience in PCB design
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D departments, manufacturing settingsDesign teams, manufacturing, or product development
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics, aerospace, automotive, consumer electronicsElectronics manufacturing, consumer devices, industrial equipment

The main difference between a Senior Pcb Design Engineer and a Pcb Design Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more advanced skills, lead design projects, and mentor junior staff, whereas Pcb Design Engineers focus on executing design tasks under supervision. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in comparable environments, but the senior position involves greater leadership and project management responsibilities.

Job description

PCB Design Engineer

Location: Orlando, FL

Work Schedule: On-site

Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly

Compensation: Based on experience

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced PCB Design Engineer to support the development of high-performance printed circuit boards for advanced RF, microwave, analog, and digital applications.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with PCB layout and a solid understanding of high-frequency design principles, signal integrity, controlled impedance, grounding, shielding, and manufacturability. This role will work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to transform electrical schematics into reliable, production-ready PCB designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop layouts for single- and multi-layer printed circuit boards used in RF, microwave, mixed-signal, analog, and digital applications.
  • Convert electrical schematics and engineering requirements into accurate PCB layouts.
  • Perform component placement and routing with emphasis on signal integrity, isolation, thermal performance, and manufacturability.
  • Design controlled-impedance structures, including microstrip, stripline, and coplanar waveguide configurations.
  • Apply appropriate RF grounding, shielding, and isolation techniques to reduce coupling, noise, EMI/EMC, and crosstalk.
  • Consider high-frequency effects and parasitics when developing PCB layouts.
  • Support designs involving filters, oscillators, low-noise circuits, and other RF components.
  • Develop PCB stack-ups appropriate for high-frequency applications, including RF laminates and hybrid material constructions.
  • Evaluate dielectric properties, loss characteristics, and other material considerations that may affect RF performance.
  • Prepare complete documentation packages for PCB fabrication and assembly, including Gerber/ODB++ data, drill files, stack-up information, fabrication drawings, and assembly documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and assist with tolerance and manufacturability evaluations.
  • Coordinate with PCB fabricators to resolve technical questions and ensure designs meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Work with manufacturing and production personnel to identify and resolve PCB-related assembly or design issues.
  • Make design modifications and improvements based on engineering requirements, manufacturing feedback, and performance considerations.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and communicate design issues effectively with cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional PCB layout/design experience, preferably involving RF or high-frequency electronics.
  • Strong understanding of RF and microwave PCB layout techniques.
  • Experience with controlled impedance, transmission lines, signal integrity, grounding, shielding, and EMI/EMC considerations.
  • Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, PADS, or similar CAD platforms.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of PCB fabrication processes, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Experience preparing PCB fabrication and assembly documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with IPC standards and high-reliability PCB design practices.
  • Ability to work with ITAR-controlled technical information without requiring a license.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent technical education and professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of PCB design/layout experience, with demonstrated exposure to RF, microwave, or high-frequency applications.
