JOB SUMMARY:
The VP, Risk will lead and advance the Credit Union's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Operational Risk Management (ORM), and Model Risk Management (MRM) programs. This leader is responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive risk management framework that aligns with the Credit Union's strategic objectives, growth, complexity, and risk appetite. The role ensures that risk management practices are effectively integrated into decision-making processes across the organization.
The VP, Risk provides oversight of enterprise-wide risks and promotes a strong risk culture through effective governance, reporting, challenge, monitoring, and collaboration with business leaders. This position plays a critical leadership role within the second line of defense and is responsible for ensuring risk management programs remain aligned with regulatory expectations, industry best practices, and organizational objectives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead and develop the Credit Union's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Operational Risk Management (ORM), and Model Risk Management (MRM) programs in alignment with organizational objectives and risk appetite.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of risk management strategy, governance processes, and enterprise risk initiatives.
  • Oversee enterprise risk assessments and facilitate the identification, monitoring, and mitigation of strategic, operational, financial, technology, model, and emerging risks.
  • Direct operational risk programs, including risk and control self-assessments (RCSAs), issue management, operational loss reporting, control testing, and risk monitoring activities.
  • Develop and oversee model governance activities, including model inventory management, validation oversight, performance monitoring, issue remediation, and risk reporting.
  • Develop and maintain risk management policies, standards, methodologies, and reporting processes that support effective risk governance.
  • Monitor enterprise risk exposures, key risk indicators, and emerging risks, escalating significant concerns to leadership as appropriate.
  • Provide and risk advisory partnership to business leaders regarding risk exposures, control effectiveness, new products, services, technologies, and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead Risk Committee activities and support preparation of risk reporting for executive management and the Board of Directors.
  • Conduct risk assessments, control reviews, and gap analyses, recommending improvements to strengthen governance, controls, and risk management practices.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging risks, and evolving regulatory expectations and recommend program enhancements as needed.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, performance management, and development for risk team members.
  • Establish department goals, priorities, budgets, and performance measures aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Build collaborative partnerships across business units and independent risk functions while maintaining appropriate second-line oversight.
  • Other projects, responsibilities, or duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
  • Expert-level knowledge of enterprise, operational, and model risk management frameworks.
  • Advanced understanding of risk governance, risk assessments, internal controls, and regulatory expectations.
  • Ability to provide effective challenge and strategic risk guidance to senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence decisions and build partnerships across the organization.

  • Experience developing risk metrics, KRIs, dashboards, and management reporting.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including executive-level reporting.

  • Proficiency with GRC systems, risk management tools, and data analytics platforms.

MIN QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Risk Management, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field. Equivalent combination of experience and education considered in lieu of degree.
  • 12+ years of progressive experience in enterprise risk management, operational risk management, model risk management, internal audit, or related risk disciplines within financial services.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing risk programs, projects, and professional staff.
  • Experience developing and administering enterprise risk management frameworks, risk assessments, governance processes, and risk reporting programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Risk Management, Economics, Analytics, or a related field.
  • Professional certification such as FRM, PRM, CRISC, CERP, CIA, CFA, or similar designation.
  • Experience leading Enterprise Risk Management, Operational Risk Management, or Model Risk Management programs within a midsize or large financial institution.
  • Experience at a credit union strongly preferred.
