Reporting to Cando’s Chief Legal Officer, the Claims and Risk Manager is part of a growing risk management function responsible for the development, implementation and management of a comprehensive enterprise-wide risk management program to effectively manage corporate risk via insurance and other risk management strategies. The Claims and Risk Manager plays a pivotal role in identifying, analyzing and mitigating risks inherent to operations and works closely with a variety of Cando departments, including Safety, Environmental and Regulatory, Mechanical and Equipment, Finance and People. We are looking for an individual who is a strategic thinker with a robust understanding of risk management practices applicable to the rail industry. This position requires strong leadership, problem solving, decision making and communication skills.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities include:
  • Develop, implement and manage a comprehensive enterprise-wide risk management program to effectively mitigate corporate risk via insurance and other risk management strategies.
  • Manage Cando’s insurance program, including compilation of underwriting information, policy renewals, certificate management, claims reporting / administration and coordinating with brokers, adjusters and insurers as necessary.
  • Manage workers’ compensation claims in conjunction with HR and Service Delivery.
  • Receive and triage claims as reported across all functional areas, including coordination of all claims-related activities and resolution of bona fide claims within retentions where appropriate.
  • Implement and oversee internal processes to ensure the proper and efficient handling of claims.
  • Manage relationships with third party service providers including brokers, insurers and other TPAs.
  • Prepare loss analyses and budgets, identify exposures, recommend solutions, implement approved risk management strategies, promote loss prevention, update and monitor compliance with insurance procedures.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify areas of vulnerability and recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish risk management protocols and promote a culture of risk awareness and compliance.
  • Develop standards for insurance requirements in contracts (both from a supplier and customer perspective) and provide review, guidance and negotiation related to insurance requirements where required to ensure third-party risk considerations are appropriately addressed.
  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations and best practices related to risk management and insurance.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to enhance internal risk management knowledge and practices.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for senior management, board of directors and third-party stakeholders as required.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
  • Experience as a Claims and Risk Manager or similar role dealing with risk management and insurance programs within a large organization.
  • Knowledge and understanding of risk assessment techniques, commercial insurance policies and claims handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and industry standards related to the rail industry, risk management, compliance and insurance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex data and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to negotiate and create positive relationships with insurance brokers, carriers and other risk management service providers.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience working with employees and the applicable agencies to ensure employees safe and timely return to work after workplace injuries
  • Experience with risk management software and tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products and other data analysis tools.
