They utilize tools for logging, monitoring, tracing, and alerting to ensure that systems are observable and any issues can be quickly detected and resolved. In addition to technical expertise, they often collaborate with development and operations teams to establish best practices, improve incident response, and optimize system performance. Their work is crucial for maintaining uptime, enhancing customer experiences, and supporting the scalability of technology platforms.

How does a senior observability engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

A Senior Observability Engineer works closely with both development and operations teams to ensure robust monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions are in place across all applications and infrastructure. They often participate in architecture discussions to advise on best practices for instrumenting code and systems for observability. By analyzing metrics and alerting patterns, they help teams proactively resolve issues and optimize system performance. This role also involves mentoring engineers on observability tools and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability in incident response.

Full-time

Re-posted 28 days ago

Job description

Our client is hiring a Senior Frontend Engineer to be a technical anchor for their Marketplace web rewrite program. You’ll lead the rebuild of our highest-traffic journeys and help set the frontend patterns and standards the team will reuse across the site for years.
This is a Senior role with Staff-leaning scope. We’re intentionally building levels gradually, and we expect this hire to grow into Staff as they expand cross-team influence and ownership.
Location:
NYC (4 days per week - Mon - Thurs)
Salary:
The base salary range is $170,000–$210,000, plus equity, commensurate with experience.
Tech stack
Frontend: Next.js (App Router), React, TypeScript, Tailwind, shadcn/ui
Testing: Playwright
Observability: Datadog
Backend context: Ruby on Rails and Node.js on AWS, with Postgres and MongoDB
What You’ll Do
  • Own major initiatives end-to-end across our highest-traffic surfaces, starting with Search Results (SRP) and Details (DLP), with clear goals around Core Web Vitals, SEO, and conversion.
  • Lead technical design for large changes (RFCs/design docs), drive alignment with Product/Design, and make pragmatic tradeoffs that stick.
  • Define and implement reusable patterns in a Next.js App Router codebase (routing/data fetching, caching strategy, component architecture, error handling, analytics instrumentation).
  • Raise the quality bar through standards, reviews, and mentorship, helping a junior-leaning team level up quickly.
  • Improve developer velocity by shaping tooling and practices (testing strategy with Playwright, observability with Datadog, CI hygiene).
  • Partner with backend engineers on API contracts to improve frontend performance and iteration speed.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years building production web applications (or equivalent senior-level experience).
  • Deep React expertise and strong command of modern frontend architecture, especially in Next.js-style SSR/SPA hybrids.
  • Proven experience leading rewrites or major migrations of high-traffic surfaces with measurable results (Core Web Vitals, SEO, conversion, reliability).
  • Strong technical judgment and ability to lead ambiguous projects from scoping through rollout and measurement.
  • High engineering bar: strong testing discipline, observability mindset, and maintainable code.
  • Ability to mentor and raise the bar for a team through clear communication and technical leadership.
Growth path
We expect this hire to grow into Staff by expanding scope from owning SRP/DLP to setting org-wide frontend standards, influencing adjacent teams, and leading additional high-impact surfaces as the rewrite program scales.
