What is a senior network engineer?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

What are some common challenges faced by senior network engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What does a senior network engineer do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

What is the difference between Senior Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectSenior Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNP, CCIE, Cisco certificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesign, implement, and troubleshoot complex networksMaintain and support existing network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesNetwork architecture, advanced troubleshooting, project leadershipNetwork setup, monitoring, routine maintenance

While both roles involve network management, a Senior Network Engineer focuses on designing and implementing complex network solutions, often leading projects. In contrast, a Network Administrator primarily maintains and supports existing networks, ensuring smooth daily operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior network engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, security, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and experience with tools like Cisco IOS, Juniper, or cloud networking platforms, along with certifications such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and leadership are crucial for designing solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures that support critical business operations.

Job description

Network Engineer

The Opportunity:

A well-designed network is critical to move data and enable organizations to achieve their missions, but how can an organization make sure their network will fit their current and evolving needs? Crafting the right network with the right equipment and software requires a combination of technical skill and careful planning. That's why we need you, a network engineer who knows how to develop the exact network the Navy needs.

As a Network Engineer on our team, you'll use your skills in Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, including virtual local area networks (VLANs), trunking, EtherChannel, Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), access control lists (ACLs), network address translation (NAT), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and Domain Name System (DNS) to help support the nation's defense and respond to evolving adversaries. You will be integrating and troubleshooting network security technologies, including firewalls, proxies, and identity-based access control solutions such as Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System Plus (TACACS+), and Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS).

You'll apply your knowledge in routing and switching, integration of encryption gear, network design and architecture, system interoperability, IP engineering, network transport layers, multi-protocol label switching, gateway protocol, virtual routing, and forwarding as you join our team of problem-solvers to help the DoD evolve and deploy new capabilities and technologies.

Your knowledge of network protocols, equipment, emerging technology, and configurations will come in handy as you help optimize client operations and modernization. Using your experience in networking and security, you'll serve as a trusted advisor to clients on mission-critical projects. Using your technical curiosity and knowledge of industry standards, you'll make an impact on national security missions.

Grow your career with us as we help to optimize and protect our country's naval fleet.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of experience providing technical support to IT networks

  • Experience designing, configuring, integrating, or troubleshooting Cisco enterprise network infrastructure

  • Experience implementing and supporting Layer 2 or Layer 3 networking, including switching, routing, virtual local area networks (VLANs), trunking, EtherChannel, Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), access control lists (ACLs), network address translation (NAT), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), or Domain Name System (DNS)

  • Experience with enterprise routing technologies, including static routing, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), or supporting Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)-based enterprise networks

  • Experience with network security technologies, including firewalls, proxies, or identity-based access control solutions such as Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System Plus (TACACS+), Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS), Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA), or IEEE 802.1X

  • Experience performing network integration, system testing, troubleshooting, or technical documentation within a cross-functional engineering environment

  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a cross-functional engineering team, lead technical efforts, communicate effectively with customers, teammates, and stakeholders, and demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a solution-oriented mindset

  • Secret clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a STEM field

  • CompTIA Security+ or CISSP Certification and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Certification

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with United States Navy Enterprise Networks

  • Experience with network automation using Python, Ansible, or similar tools

  • Top Secret clearance
