What is a senior network engineer?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

What does a senior network engineer do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior network engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, security, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and experience with tools like Cisco IOS, Juniper, or cloud networking platforms, along with certifications such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and leadership are crucial for designing solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by senior network engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What is the difference between Senior Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

Role Overview

We are seeking a delivery‑focused Network Engineer with strong network automation experience to support ongoing network modernization, site deployments, and SD‑WAN initiatives. This role is ideal for an engineer who has a background in Network Deployment and who excels at building and delivering easy to use GUI based automation scripts for production environments.

You will work hands‑on with Aruba wired, wireless, and SD‑WAN platforms, leveraging automation to accelerate deployments, standardize configurations, and reduce operational risk.  Success in this role means providing working solutions—automation, config, and tooling—that directly support network delivery timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and support enterprise network engineering and automation solutions using Aruba Central (Aruba AOS-CX, AOS10), and Aruba EdgeConnect SD‑WAN.
  • Build automation to support new site turn‑ups, network migrations, network access control initiatives, and SD‑WAN deployment
  • Develop or integrate front‑end GUI components (internal portals, dashboards, or tooling) that simplify network delivery workflows.
  • Use APIs to integrate network platforms with automation pipelines and enterprise systems.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, implementation teams, and operations to meet delivery deadlines.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and remediation during deployments; feed lessons learned back into automation improvements.
  • Maintain clear documentation for deployment scripts, automation workflows, and operational handoffs.

Required Qualifications

Networking (7+ years):

  • 7+ years of hands‑on experience in enterprise networking roles.
  • Strong foundation in TCP/IP, routing, switching, and wireless networking.
  • Experience deploying and supporting Cisco and Aruba campus and branch networks.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills during network delivery and cutover events.

Network Automation (7+ years in production):

  • 7+ years successfully using network automation in live production environments.
  • Demonstrated experience using automation to:
    • Accelerate delivery timelines
    • Reduce configuration errors
    • Improve deployment consistency
  • Experience with:
    • Python for network automation and data handling.
    • Ansible for orchestration and configuration management
    • Terraform for infrastructure‑as‑code (network modules preferred)
  • Experience developing automation that produces clear reports for the Deployment team (HTML dashboards, UI elements, CSVs).
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and integrating SaaS management platforms (especially Aruba Central).
  • Experience using Git for version control and collaborative development.

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Aruba certifications (ACMP, ACMA, or equivalent).
  • Experience with Aruba EdgeConnect SD‑WAN automated provisioning.
  • Front‑end or UI technologies (e.g. Flask/Django front ends, HTML, CSS, Javascript, React).
  • CI/CD integration for network delivery pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
  • Experience supporting multi‑site rollouts, mergers, acquisitions, or parallel network builds.
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust, NAC, or security integrations with Aruba platforms.

What Success Looks Like

  • New sites and SD‑WAN deployments are delivered faster with fewer issues due to automation.
  • Network configurations are standardized and repeatable across environments.
  • Operations and deployment teams have usable reports and GUIs that simplify day‑to‑day delivery work.
  • Reduction in error rates and site re-touches, reduction in hours spent on site analysis and site deployment
