Shipyard Rigger Improver

Pay: $17-$19 based on experience
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated Shipyard Rigger Improver with a minimum of 2 years of shipyard rigging experience to support the movement, lifting, positioning, and installation of heavy equipment, machinery, and structural components aboard U.S. Navy and commercial vessels. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of safe rigging practices, the ability to work in physically demanding environments, and a commitment to safety and quality.
Responsibilities
- Assist with rigging operations involving shipboard equipment, machinery, and structural components.
- Inspect, select, and properly use wire rope, chain falls, slings, shackles, hooks, and other rigging equipment.
- Calculate load weights and determine proper rigging methods under the direction of senior riggers or supervisors.
- Operate chain falls, come-alongs, winches, and other rigging devices safely.
- Signal crane operators using standard hand signals or approved communication methods.
- Participate in lifting, moving, positioning, and securing heavy materials throughout the shipyard.
- Perform pre-use inspections of rigging gear and report damaged or defective equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area while following all shipyard housekeeping standards.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, rigging sketches, and work instructions.
- Follow all OSHA, NAVSEA, and shipyard safety procedures.
- Work effectively with shipfitters, welders, machinists, crane operators, and other trades.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of shipyard rigging experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of safe rigging practices and load handling procedures.
- Ability to identify proper rigging hardware for various lifting applications.
- Experience working in an industrial or shipyard environment.
- Ability to safely work at heights, in confined spaces, and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
- Basic understanding of crane signals and lifting operations.
- Ability to read tape measures and perform basic math calculations.
- Must possess strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting U.S. Navy ship repair or new construction projects.
- Current OSHA 10 Maritime or OSHA 10 Construction certification.
- NCCER Rigger certification or equivalent (preferred but not required).
- Experience with NAVSEA Standard Items and shipyard safety requirements.
