What is a senior metal building erector?

Senior Metal Building Erectors are experienced professionals responsible for assembling and installing pre-engineered metal buildings. They lead teams in reading blueprints, preparing foundations, and constructing the structural framework, walls, and roofs of metal buildings. Their role includes ensuring safety, quality control, and adherence to project specifications, as well as mentoring junior crew members. Senior erectors typically have several years of field experience and a deep understanding of construction processes and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior metal building erector?

To thrive as a Senior Metal Building Erector, you need advanced knowledge of construction techniques, blueprint reading, and structural steel assembly, often backed by several years of industry experience or a relevant certification. Familiarity with power tools, cranes, welding equipment, and safety management systems like OSHA standards is essential. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and ensuring project efficiency. These skills and qualities are important for maintaining safety, structural integrity, and timely completion of large-scale building projects.

What are some common challenges faced by senior metal building erectors on large-scale projects, and how are they typically addressed?

Senior Metal Building Erectors often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, variable weather conditions, and coordinating with multiple trades on-site. Effective communication and detailed pre-planning meetings are essential to ensure that all teams are aligned and potential conflicts are identified early. Senior Erectors are expected to lead by example, troubleshoot unexpected structural issues, and adapt schedules as needed while maintaining safety and quality standards. Their leadership in mentoring less-experienced crew members and fostering teamwork is also crucial in overcoming on-site challenges and ensuring project success.

Job description

Job description:

Summit City Steel Erection is hiring craftsmen at every level. From guys just getting into the trade to seasoned foremen who've been running iron for twenty years — if you work hard, show up ready, and take pride in what you build, we want to hear from you.

We self-perform structural steel erection, pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) construction, crane services, and millwright work across Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. We own our fleet, we invest in our people, and we run real work year-round.

About SCSE

Summit City Steel Erection is a full-service structural steel, metal building, and millwright contractor headquartered in Whitley County, Indiana. We run 18+ active jobsites across four states with one of the most equipped fleets in the Midwest, including Liebherr MK 140 mobile tower cranes you won't find on most jobsites.

We install pre-engineered metal buildings from all the major manufacturers — including Nucor, Butler, Chief, Kirby, and American Buildings — and self-perform structural steel from anchor bolt to ridge cap. We're an ISNetworld-approved contractor pursuing AISC Certified Erector and IAS AC478 accreditation, with two AWS Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI) on staff.

Our belief is simple: safety, quality, and productivity don't compete — they compound.
