What is a Senior MERN Stack Developer?

A Senior MERN Stack Developer is an experienced software engineer who specializes in building full-stack web applications using the MERN stack: MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js. They handle both front-end and back-end development, create scalable and efficient applications, and often mentor junior team members. In addition to coding, they may be responsible for designing application architecture, optimizing performance, and ensuring best practices throughout the development process.

How does a Senior MERN Stack Developer typically collaborate with other team members on large-scale projects?

As a Senior MERN Stack Developer, you’ll often work closely with front-end and back-end developers, UI/UX designers, QA engineers, and product managers to deliver robust web applications. Collaboration usually involves participating in code reviews, architectural discussions, sprint planning, and daily stand-up meetings. You may also mentor junior developers, help define best practices, and ensure seamless integration across the MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) stack. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, especially when troubleshooting complex issues or deploying new features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior MERN Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior MERN Stack Developer, you need deep expertise in JavaScript, proficiency with MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Experience using source control systems like Git, familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS), and understanding of CI/CD pipelines are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and effective communication skills help you guide teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure efficient development of scalable web applications and effective team leadership in dynamic tech environments.

Is a Senior MERN Stack Developer full-stack in demand?

A Senior MERN Stack Developer, skilled in MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js, is in high demand due to the popularity of JavaScript-based full-stack development. Companies seek experienced developers for building scalable web applications, and proficiency in these technologies often leads to strong job prospects and competitive salaries.

Is senior MERN stack developer still in demand in 2026?

Senior MERN stack developers remain in demand in 2026 due to the continued growth of web applications and the popularity of JavaScript frameworks. Skills in React, Node.js, and MongoDB are highly valued, especially for roles requiring full-stack expertise and experience with cloud deployment and modern development tools.

What is a typical senior MERN stack developer salary?

A senior MERN stack developer typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Strong skills in React, Node.js, MongoDB, and Express are often required, and salaries tend to increase with expertise and certifications.

Position Summary

We're building a world of health around every individual - shaping a more connected, convenient and compassionate health experience. At CVS Health®, you'll be surrounded by passionate colleagues who care deeply, innovate with purpose, hold ourselves accountable and prioritize safety and quality in everything we do. Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Developer to serve as the hands‑on technical anchor for our engineering team, owning architecture and critical‑path development directly while setting technical direction and mentoring engineers across the team. This is a deeply hands‑on role: most of the time is spent designing, building, and reviewing code, not delegating it. You will partner closely with product, architecture, and business stakeholders to translate business goals into a technical roadmap and execution plan, while maintaining the highest standards of code quality, security, and operational reliability.

Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in large‑scale software development, including developing applications, web services, and cloud‑native applications using Java, Spring Boot, React, REST APIs, JPA, messaging, and related open‑source or proprietary technologies
  • 5+ years designing and developing highly scalable microservices, web services, and REST APIs
  • 5+ years of experience working in Agile development environments
  • 3+ years of experience developing production‑grade applications and services in Python, including API development (FastAPI/Flask) and integration with AI/ML frameworks
  • 3+ years of experience with distributed messaging systems such as Kafka (topics, partitions, consumer groups), or equivalent (RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, AWS SQS/SNS)
  • 2+ years in a technical lead role
  • 2+ years of experience designing event‑driven architectures and asynchronous integration patterns using message queues/streaming platforms
  • 2+ years of experience building and maintaining Python‑based data pipelines, automation scripts, or AI‑agent workflows (e.g., LangGraph, LangChain, RAG architectures)
  • 2+ years of hands‑on experience deploying and operating services on a cloud platform (GCP preferred, including GKE/Cloud Run, Cloud Build, IAM, and logging/monitoring)
  • 2+ years of experience with CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Argo
  • 2+ years of experience with source management tools such as GitHub or GitLab
  • 2+ years of experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives while mentoring other engineers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and developing in a Test‑Driven Development environment
  • Experience with NoSQL/document databases (MongoDB Atlas preferred), including schema design and data lifecycle management
  • Exposure to GenAI/LLM‑assisted development - such as using AI tooling for code analysis, refactoring, or agentic workflows (e.g., Claude, OpenAI, Gemini - Vertex AI)
  • Experience with accessibility (A11y), web performance, and stability best practices
Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (High School diploma plus 4 years of relevant work experience)
