Job description

SUMMARY

The East Asia & Pacific (EAP) Area Manager is a China-based regional leader responsible for driving AMPP’s growth and strategic presence throughout China and the broader EAP region. Serving as AMPP’s primary regional representative, the Area Manager develops strategic relationships with members, chapters, corporate partners, government and regulatory bodies, state-owned and private enterprises, academic institutions, and industry associations.

The position executes regional initiatives aligned with AMPP’s Strategic Geographies framework, provides market intelligence, builds sustainable partnerships, and collaborates with AMPP’s global teams to increase membership, industry influence, program participation, and revenue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop and execute growth strategies aligned with AMPP’s Strategic Geographies framework, with particular emphasis on China and the broader EAP region.
  • Identify and pursue business opportunities across key industries, including Maritime, Civil Infrastructure, Energy/Oil & Gas, Defense, Mining, Manufacturing, and Water/Wastewater.
  • Serve as AMPP’s primary in-country representative and build relationships with members, chapters, corporate partners, government agencies, regulatory and standards bodies, state-owned and private enterprises, academic institutions, and industry associations.
  • Establish strategic partnerships and commercial opportunities that expand AMPP’s membership, certification, education, sponsorship, technical programs, and revenue.
  • Represent AMPP at industry conferences, technical forums, trade exhibitions, government engagements, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Monitor government policies, regulatory developments, industry standards, procurement practices, economic conditions, and market trends affecting AMPP’s regional strategy.
  • Provide senior leadership with market intelligence and recommendations concerning competitive conditions, regulatory risks, industry challenges, and emerging opportunities.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to develop and deliver regional conferences, training programs, technical events, member activities, and other initiatives.
  • Adapt regional programs, communications, and engagement strategies to local language, cultural, regulatory, and business requirements while maintaining AMPP’s global standards and brand.
  • Manage assigned budgets, forecasts, vendors, and financial performance in compliance with AMPP policies.
  • Track and report stakeholder engagement, business opportunities, regional risks, KPIs, and business outcomes to senior leadership.
  • Lead special projects and strategic initiatives supporting AMPP’s global growth objectives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may supervise employees, contractors, and other regional resources, including hiring, assigning work, coaching, evaluating performance, and administering corrective action in coordination with Human Resources and applicable local requirements.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel is expected approximately 40%–60% of the time within China, throughout the EAP region, and periodically to the United States. A valid passport and required travel authorizations are required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, international relations, marketing, association management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in business development, regional management, government or industry relations, or stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting business in China and knowledge of its commercial, regulatory, governmental, and cultural environment.
  • Experience working with Chinese government agencies, regulatory or standards bodies, state-owned enterprises, private companies, academic institutions, or industry associations is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working across the EAP region and within Energy/Oil & Gas, Maritime, Civil Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Mining, or Water/Wastewater is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of corrosion, coatings, materials protection, certification, training, or technical associations is beneficial but not required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Professional fluency in spoken Mandarin Chinese and English and written proficiency in Chinese and English are required.
  • Strong presentation and business communication skills, including preparing reports, correspondence, and presentations for government, regulatory, member, and corporate stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Shanghainese or another language used within the EAP region is desirable but not required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Proficiency in calculating and interpreting percentages, budgets, forecasts, financial information, graphs, and performance reports.

REASONING SKILLS

Strong analytical and independent judgment skills, including identifying problems, evaluating data, managing complex variables, assessing risks, and implementing appropriate actions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Legal authorization to work in China.
  • Valid passport and eligibility to obtain required international visas and travel authorizations.

OTHER SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Demonstrated capability to build relationships and credibility with senior business leaders, government representatives, regulators, members, volunteers, and corporate partners.
  • Strong negotiation, relationship management, business development, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Capacity to operate independently as AMPP’s in-country representative while remaining aligned with its global leadership, policies, objectives, and brand.
  • Competency in managing multiple priorities, projects, risks, and stakeholder expectations across countries, cultures, and time zones.
  • Personnel management experience, including directing work, coaching employees, evaluating performance, and addressing performance concerns, is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in standard business software and the capacity to learn association-specific systems.

WORK LOCATION

This position is based at AMPP’s office in Shanghai, China, and requires regular collaboration with AMPP’s global teams.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position regularly requires sitting, communicating, and operating a computer and occasionally requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds.

Frequent domestic and international travel requires extended periods of sitting, walking through airports and event venues, and transporting business materials.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position operates across office, customer, industry event, training, and travel environments. Occasional work outside standard local business hours may be required to support AMPP’s global operations.
