Their role often includes troubleshooting complex issues, integrating new technologies with existing systems, and mentoring junior engineers. These specialists are essential for organizations that rely on mainframes for large-scale data processing and transaction management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior mainframe software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Mainframe Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and mainframe architecture, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, CICS, RACF, and version control systems is typically required, along with certifications like IBM Certified System Programmer as a plus. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for leading projects and collaborating with cross-functional teams. • Work with CICS, VSAM, MQ and other mainframe technologies as required by the application environment.
  • Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and deliver timely, durable resolutions.
  • Configure, optimize, and deploy packaged software or other enterprise platforms when applicable.
  • Collaborate with architects and project teams to ensure designs, development practices, and delivered solutions meet GM quality and security requirements.
  • Support application modernization, migration, cloud-integration, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Promote efficient code reuse, standardized engineering practices, automated testing, and secure software design.
  • Work effectively in Agile, Scrum, DevOps, iterative, or other software-development environments.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced team members.
  • Participate in on-call and production-support activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
  • 7+ more years of mainframe software-development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2, IMS, and z/OS.
  • Experience with CICS, VSAM, batch processing, and production support.
  • Experience with relational databases, data integration, SQL and enterprise application interfaces.
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and software-development methodologies such as Agile, Scrum, Iterative, or Waterfall.
  • Strong understanding of application security, software design, maintainability, and efficient code reuse.
  • Strong analytical, communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.
  • Experience with modern mainframe toolsets for discovery, profiling, and migration automation
  • CI/CD experience in defining and managing the build, deployment, and release pipelines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience using Java, REST, microservices, and containers (Openshift Container Platform or Docker/Kubernetes) and integrating mainframe and midrange applications
  • Solid understanding of midrange platforms and frameworks such as Spring Boot and Spring Framework.
  • Agile, Scrum, Kanban methodologies
  • DevOps: IBM Developer for z/OS Systems, ADO, Git, IBM DBB
  • IBM tools: ITOM, RACF, Connect-Direct, IBM Rational Functional Tester, IBM Optim, ADDI
