To thrive as a Senior Mainframe Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and mainframe architecture, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, CICS, RACF, and version control systems is typically required, along with certifications like IBM Certified System Programmer as a plus.
