Job Summary

Under direction of the Outreach Coordinator, provides friendly, high quality customer service to Library customers. Performs a variety of information, reader's advisory, collection, programming, and outreach duties.


Core Job Functions

  • Drives the Mobile Library to community stops as required; parks and connects the Mobile Library to electrical outlet as necessary.
  • Unloads and loads trucks of books as necessary for a customer access at some stops, especially senior facilities
  • Assists disabled customers to enter the Mobile Library by its ramp as necessary
  • Assists customers in finding answers to a broad range of questions using Library resources and databases as necessary
  • Guides customers in selecting appropriate materials for reading/viewing/listening
  • Plans and presents Library-related programs, events, and classes
  • Assists with circulation and interlibrary loan procedures
  • Helps to develop and maintains the Mobile Library's collection
  • Resolves customer concerns about Library policies, procedures, and rules
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with diverse community partners and youth serving organizations that share a common mission
  • Uses technology to serve customers and to streamline workflow; provides technology related instruction, assisting customers with technology-related questions and issues
  • Supports innovation by embracing change, being flexible, and anticipating customers' needs
  • Demonstrates initiative by being a self-starter, rethinking processes, and effectively solving problems
  • Demonstrates a commitment to teamwork by being an effective communicator and engaging in respectful and productive work relationships
  • Participates in workshops or trainings as requested

  • Assist with library reports and statistics
  • Handle customer complaints and resolve vehicle issues

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Technological systems and their uses as described under Level 3 - Information Staff Technology Competency (see Technology Competencies)
  • General interest in reading and literature, and an awareness of trends in popular culture as well as current news events as they relate to customer interests and needs

Ability to:

  • Operate a 26' long vehicle safely and responsibly
  • Learn St. Mary's County Library policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, Library trustees, local government elected and appointed officials, community leaders, vendors, and citizensย 
  • Operate relevant computer systems (including hardware and software), current audiovisual equipment, and office machinesย 
  • Use common sense and good judgement
  • Travel throughout the system and community, work a variety of schedules that include evenings and weekends, and accept system-wide transfers
  • Work effectively and calmly under pressure

Training and/or Education

Bachelor's Degree


Experience

Two years or more of customer service experience or equivalent training, education and/or experience.


Licenses or Certificates

  • Must complete the Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) from the Maryland State Library or 9 hours of formal academic course work in library science within two years of hire.
  • Valid Maryland Driver's License (No Commercial Driver's License required)
