Position Overview
BLOC Resources is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Designer - Piping SR 3 to support major power generation, retrofit, environmental, and new-generation infrastructure projects based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
This senior-level position is responsible for developing complex 3D piping and equipment designs, producing detailed engineering and construction drawings, supporting field activities, and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams to deliver safe, constructible, cost-effective, and technically accurate designs.
The successful candidate will bring 20+ years of relevant mechanical/piping design experience, with a strong background supporting power generation facilities or comparable heavy industrial environments. Candidates should possess extensive knowledge of piping systems, equipment layouts, piping components, material selection, valve selection, pipe supports, P&IDs, construction practices, and applicable engineering codes and standards.
This position also requires the ability to provide technical leadership, review the work of others, coordinate across engineering disciplines, support construction activities, and independently manage design responsibilities across multiple concurrent projects.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Piping Design & 3D Modeling
  • Develop detailed 3D piping and equipment models for retrofit, environmental, new-generation, and other major capital projects.
  • Perform piping system layout and equipment arrangement activities using applicable 3D design platforms.
  • Develop designs for new construction as well as modifications to existing operating facilities.
  • Create piping layouts that consider constructability, accessibility, maintenance requirements, equipment clearances, and safe facility operations.
  • Develop and modify equipment arrangements and general arrangement drawings.
  • Incorporate field conditions and existing plant configurations into design models.
  • Coordinate piping routes with structural, civil, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Identify potential design conflicts and work collaboratively to develop practical solutions.
Engineering Drawings & Deliverables
Prepare, develop, modify, and review technical deliverables including:
  • 2D orthographic drawings
  • Piping isometric drawings
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Pipe support designs and details
  • Equipment layouts
  • General arrangement drawings
  • Piping plans and sections
  • 3D piping models

Ensure drawings and design packages are complete, technically accurate, and suitable for engineering and construction use.
Piping Components & Material Selection
  • Assist with the sizing and selection of piping components.
  • Apply knowledge of pipe materials, fittings, valves, flanges, and related components.
  • Prepare accurate material take-offs (MTOs) based on project design requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of basic piping fabrication and construction techniques.
  • Evaluate piping components for compatibility with project requirements.
  • Support material and equipment decisions in collaboration with engineering personnel and vendors.
Design Review & Quality Control
  • Review and check piping drawings, models, design documents, and related technical deliverables.
  • Verify designs for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and constructability.
  • Apply applicable codes, standards, specifications, and established design practices.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews.
  • Review design interfaces between piping systems, equipment, structures, electrical systems, and other disciplines.
  • Identify potential design issues before construction and recommend corrective solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement in design quality and standardization.
Field & Construction Support
The Mechanical Designer - Piping SR 3 will provide field support throughout various stages of project execution.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Travel to generating plants and project/job sites to gather field information.
  • Conduct field walkdowns and verify existing plant conditions.
  • Obtain dimensions, equipment information, routing information, and other data required for design development.
  • Compare existing conditions against drawings, P&IDs, and models.
  • Assist with resolving field design and constructability issues.
  • Provide technical support during construction.
  • Coordinate with plant personnel and construction teams regarding field conditions.
  • Support modifications to designs based on verified field conditions.
  • Participate in project meetings, field reviews, and construction-support activities as required.
Technical Leadership & Project Coordination
As a senior-level designer, this position may be expected to:
  • Lead or provide technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Coordinate design activities among engineers, designers, plant personnel, construction personnel, and vendors.
  • Provide technical guidance to less-experienced designers.
  • Assist with establishing design priorities and project deliverables.

  • Extensive experience designing mechanical piping systems.
  • Experience supporting the new construction and/or retrofit of power generation facilities or comparable heavy industrial facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing 3D piping and equipment designs.
  • Experience producing 2D orthographic drawings and piping isometrics.
  • Experience developing and working with P&IDs.
  • Experience designing and/or detailing pipe supports.
  • Experience reviewing and developing general arrangement drawings.
  • Demonstrated experience checking design drawings and technical documents.
  • Experience preparing material take-offs.
  • Strong knowledge of piping construction practices, techniques, and concepts.
  • Working knowledge of piping materials and component selection.
  • Knowledge of valve selection and application.
  • Experience providing construction and field support.
  • Ability to independently complete complex assignments with minimal instruction and guidance.
