What does a senior landscape designer do?

A Senior Landscape Designer is responsible for planning, designing, and managing outdoor spaces such as gardens, parks, and commercial landscapes. They create detailed plans and drawings, select appropriate plants and materials, and often oversee installation and maintenance. Senior designers also collaborate with clients, architects, and contractors to ensure projects meet aesthetic, functional, and environmental requirements. Their role involves both creative design and technical knowledge of landscaping principles and regulations.

How does a senior landscape designer typically collaborate with architects and other stakeholders during project development?

A Senior Landscape Designer regularly works alongside architects, engineers, and planners to ensure that landscape elements align seamlessly with overall site plans and client objectives. This collaboration often involves participating in design charrettes, reviewing architectural drawings, and providing input on plant selection, grading, and sustainable practices. Clear communication and the ability to integrate feedback from diverse professionals are essential, as these projects frequently require balancing aesthetic goals with technical and regulatory considerations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior landscape designer, and why are they important?

  • Conduct on-site design consultations to understand client goals, aesthetics, and site challenges.
  • Present conceptual designs, material selections, and project budgets in a confident, polished manner.
  • Maintain a strong sales pipeline and consistently achieve annual revenue goals for large-scale design-build projects (typically $40k-$1M+)
    Design & Project Planning
  • Develop or collaborate on conceptual and preliminary landscape and hardscape designs tailored to their elevated design standards.
  • Prepare detailed proposals, scopes of work, and cost estimates with accuracy and clarity.
  • Work closely with the design studio, estimators, and production managers to ensure constructibility, profitability, and alignment with client expectations.
  • Maintain deep knowledge of plant material, hardscape elements, pools, outdoor kitchens, lighting, drainage, and luxury outdoor features.

Client Experience & Communication
  • Deliver the white-glove service experience they are known for throughout the client journey.
  • Guide clients through design phases, adjustments, and material options with professionalism and transparency.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact from discovery meeting through signed contract and project handoff.
  • Manage Change Orders throughout the project.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of proven success in high-end residential landscape design-build sales.
  • Strong design skills; proficiency with design and rendering tools (AutoCAD, Dynascape, SketchUp, Vectorworks, etc.) preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of luxury outdoor living design, horticulture, site planning, grading, drainage, and construction methods.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed, and comfortable working with high-net-worth clientele.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary/draw ranging from $90-125k or more plus a sales commission structure
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Vehicle or vehicle allowance
  • Company cell phone and technology package
  • 401(k) options and paid time off
