What does a senior Java developer do?

A Senior Java Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex Java-based applications. They often lead development teams, make architectural decisions, and ensure code quality through best practices. Their role also includes mentoring junior developers, participating in code reviews, and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver robust software solutions. Senior Java Developers are expected to have extensive experience with Java frameworks, databases, and deployment processes.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior Java developer?

To thrive as a Senior Java Developer, you need deep expertise in Java programming, object-oriented design, and a strong grasp of software development principles, typically backed by a computer science degree or relevant experience. Experience with tools like Spring Framework, Hibernate, Maven, Git, and proficiency in using integrated development environments (IDEs) such as IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse is essential, and certifications like Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) can be beneficial. Outstanding problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to mentor junior developers set top performers apart. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, maintainable code and foster high-performing teams capable of tackling complex projects.

Job description

Overview
Job Purpose
ICE Data Services (an Intercontinental Exchange company) is seeking a senior Java engineer for its Core Technology team, which builds and maintains Omega - ICE's proprietary data distribution and transformation framework, and supports a development community spanning Bond Pricing, Reference Data, and Index.
We're looking for a versatile engineer with a systems-design mindset: comfortable working at the framework level and building applications on top of it, including the agentic tooling that will shape how the development teams work going forward.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to core Omega framework development, with an eye toward extensibility and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain Omega business applications.
  • Design and build agentic tooling and automation for the development community.
  • Collaborate with developers, system engineers, business analysts, and product managers on requirements and delivery.
  • Provide production support, including occasional on call.

Knowledge and Experience
  • Deep expertise in Java SE 11+, comfortable across both framework-level and application-level code.
  • Aptitude for systems/API design - reasoning about tradeoffs like compatibility and extensibility.
  • Strong experience with large, high-throughput datasets in Java.
  • Grounding in event-driven, sequenced-message-stream architectures.
  • Fluent in GNU/Linux with at least one scripting language.
  • Skilled in JVM tuning, GC optimization, and performance profiling.
  • Proficient with Git/GitHub, Gradle, GitHub Actions CI/CD.
  • Self-directed with strong communication skills.

Preferred
  • Experience building AI/agentic tooling.
  • Experience with low-latency, deterministic event-processing systems (e.g., market data feed handlers, matching engines, or other sequenced-stream architectures).
  • Working knowledge of equity and fixed income securities.
