What does a senior Java React developer do?

A Senior Java React developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex web applications using both Java (usually for backend services) and React (for the frontend user interface). They collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project requirements, write efficient code, and ensure high-quality software delivery. In addition to coding, they often mentor junior developers, participate in code reviews, and help set technical standards for the team. Their role bridges server-side logic and client-side experiences, making them key contributors to modern web projects.

How does a senior Java React developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in agile environments?

Senior Java React developers often work closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, and QA engineers within agile teams. They participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and daily stand-ups to ensure that both backend (Java) and frontend (React) components are seamlessly integrated. Effective communication and the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions are essential, as is mentoring junior developers and driving best practices across the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior Java React developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Java React Developer, you need advanced proficiency in Java, React.js, and related frameworks, along with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with tools like Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, version control systems (e.g., Git), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you manage complex projects and mentor junior team members. These capabilities ensure the delivery of robust, scalable applications and smooth collaboration within cross-functional teams.

Job description

Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin, TX three times per week.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the team that is revolutionizing the automotive retail experience by building high-performance, customer-centric digital storefronts for GM's global vehicle commerce platform.

You will design and develop scalable, accessible, and reusable UI components using TypeScript, React/Next.js, and SolidJS web components, powering seamless vehicle inventory search, filtering, and discovery experiences across devices and markets. You'll work within a micro frontend architecture using a monorepo, contribute to our internal design system, and drive innovation through behavior analytics, accessibility best practices, and performance optimization.

A core focus of this role is Automation, AI Enablement, and Modernization— you will champion AI-assisted development practices, automate repetitive workflows, and continuously modernize the frontend stack to keep pace with evolving web standards and tooling.

This role requires strong technical depth in modern frontend engineering, a solid understanding of distributed and event-driven systems, and the ability to deliver high-quality, maintainable solutions at global scale. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on problem solver who thrives in a collaborative, cross‑functional environment and is committed to continuous learning and technical excellence.

Domain Focus — Inventory
  • Experience building search-driven UIs with advanced filtering, faceted navigation, sorting, and pagination over large vehicle inventory datasets
  • Familiarity with real-time data feeds and event-driven UI updates to reflect live inventory availability, pricing changes, and dealer allocations
  • Experience building responsive media galleries with optimized image loading (lazy loading, progressive rendering, CDN strategies) for vehicle photography and 360° views
  • Understanding of location-based experiences— map integrations, geolocation-aware dealer/inventory lookup, and proximity-based search results
  • Ability to build comparison and shortlisting experiences that allow users to evaluate multiple vehicles side‑by‑side with dynamic pricing and feature breakdowns
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 6+ years of experience in frontend software development, with a proven track record in designing scalable component architectures
  • Expert-level proficiency in TypeScript, React, and Next.js with deep understanding of modern frontend patterns (hooks, server components, SSR/SSG, ISR)
  • Hands‑on experience with SolidJS or similar reactive frameworks, ideally building web components (Custom Elements) for modular, framework-agnostic delivery
  • Strong command of CSS/SASS/Tailwind CSS with experience implementing responsive, brand-themed designs across multiple markets
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and modern programming paradigms including micro frontends, component-driven development, and reactive programming
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor peers, and drive strategic decisions aligned with business goals
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with cross-functional teams (product, design, backend, DevOps)
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience designing and building reusable UI/Web component libraries and contributing to or consuming an enterprise design system
  • Hands‑on experience with backend Java, Spring Boot, Quarkus, Azure, and CICD
  • Expertise in accessibility programming (WCAG 2.x compliance) to meet regulatory standards and enhance user inclusivity across global markets
  • Proficiency in frontend testing and quality tooling— Vitest, Playwright, BrowserStack, or equivalent — including unit, integration, and end‑to‑end test automation
  • Experience with micro frontend architecture and modular build systems (Turborepo, Vite, Rollup) supporting independent deployable packages within a monorepo
  • Ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) throughout the SDLC to accelerate delivery
