Job description

Senior Controller

This job is based in Salt Lake City, UT.

Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Multi-Location Industrial Company

Privately Held | Operationally Driven

We are seeking a Senior Controller who wants to be deeply involved in the business, not simply close books and produce reports.

This role is for someone who views accounting as a tool to improve operations, strengthen accountability, support decision making, and help drive profitable growth across a complex multi-location organization.

Our ideal candidate is highly accountable, operationally curious, process-oriented, and capable of building strong teams while partnering effectively with leadership throughout the company.

This position reports directly to executive leadership and will play a critical role in strengthening financial discipline, improving operational visibility, and supporting the long-term future of the organization.

The ideal candidate is currently working within a company generating $200 million or more in annual revenue and is seeking to transition from a large, publicly traded corporate environment to a successful, independently owned family business where they can have a greater impact and broader influence.

What You'll Do

  • Lead all accounting and financial reporting functions across a multi-location organization
  • Oversee:
    • General ledger
    • AP
    • Payroll
    • Fixed assets
    • Inventory accounting
    • Financial reporting
    • Month-end/year-end close
    • Audit and tax coordination
  • Partner closely with operations leadership to improve:
    • Inventory management
    • WIP visibility
    • Service profitability
    • Billing timeliness
    • Working capital efficiency
    • Cash conversion cycle performance
  • Produce timely and accurate monthly financial statements and operational KPI reporting
  • Support banking relationships, lender reporting, and external audits
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team while building a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Help drive ERP, reporting, and process improvement initiatives
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement scalable solutions as the company continues to grow

What Matters Most

We care far more about how you operate, lead people, solve problems, and respond under pressure than polished corporate language or perfectly written resumes.

The right person for this role:

  • Takes ownership naturally
  • Brings solutions instead of excuses
  • Operates with a strong sense of urgency
  • Is operationally curious and wants to understand how the business actually works
  • Has the confidence to challenge problems respectfully and constructively
  • Builds credibility with operational leaders
  • Believes continuous improvement is part of the job
  • Leads through accountability, humility, and consistency

We value people who "play for the name on the front:" those who put the success of the organization ahead of individual or team priorities. This includes working collaboratively across departments, sharing information, and helping create alignment rather than operating in silos.

This role requires someone who combines pride in ownership with servant leadership: a leader willing to support the team, improve systems, and hold a high standard without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

Preferred Experience

  • CPA strongly preferred
  • 10+ years progressive accounting/finance leadership experience
  • Experience in:
    • Industrial distribution
    • Equipment dealership
    • Manufacturing
    • Construction
    • Heavy equipment
    • Service-intensive operations
    • Multi-location businesses
  • Strong background in:
    • Inventory accounting
    • Job costing/WIP
    • Operational finance
    • Internal controls
    • ERP systems
    • Financial analysis
  • Experience leading and developing accounting teams
  • Experience working directly with ownership, banks, and external auditors

Traits That Will Separate You

  • You move quickly without sacrificing accuracy
  • You naturally create structure and accountability
  • You are optimistic, ambitious, and improvement-minded
  • You simplify complex financial issues for non-financial leaders
  • You are practical, hands-on, and willing to engage directly with operations
  • You can challenge people respectfully when needed
  • You care about outcomes, not just reports
  • You are energized by building stronger systems, teams, and businesses

Our Culture

We believe strong businesses are built by people who:

  • Stay curious
  • Never settle
  • Take ownership
  • Support one another
  • Move with urgency
  • Continuously improve
  • Focus on solutions instead of blame

We are not looking for someone who simply maintains accounting functions. We are looking for someone who helps improve the business.

Full benefits package including PTO, 401(k), vision, dental, life, and health insurance. Salary is dependent on experience and negotiable.
