What does a senior interior designer do?

As a senior interior designer, your responsibilities include coordinating the internal design team for a project as well as preparing and developing drawings, models, images, and materials related to the design. This design preparation includes space planning and overall layout, including architecture and furniture selection, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) that work in the space and meet the intended design goals. You explain your ideas and articulate why the concepts work to your team and then present them to the client. Other duties include running the design project on time and budget and making decisions in the best interest of the client and project without letting personal preferences influence your choices. You are expected to comply with company procedures and standards, liaise with the external design team and other organizations as needed, and continue your professional development to stay on the cutting edge of design trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior interior designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Interior Designer, you need advanced design expertise, project management experience, and a degree in interior design or a related field, often supported by NCIDQ certification. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as knowledge of building codes and materials, is essential. Creative vision, strong communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams while guiding junior designers. These qualifications enable you to deliver innovative, functional spaces that meet client needs and project requirements efficiently.

What are some typical challenges senior interior designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Interior Designers often juggle several projects at different stages, which can present challenges in time management and prioritization. Balancing client expectations, coordinating with contractors and vendors, and ensuring design consistency across projects requires strong organizational skills and clear communication. Developing effective project management strategies and leveraging design software can help streamline workflows and reduce stress. Collaboration with other team members, such as junior designers or architects, also plays a key role in successfully managing multiple assignments.

Job description

About Us

Rooted in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains โ€“ we focus on rural architecture that connects people to the landscape and to each other. We design spaces that are grounded with natural materials, elegantly composed, and rigorously detailed. We believe that beauty is essential and is achieved through human-inspiration, continuous refinement, and skilled craftspeople.

Our work spans modern homes, hospitality, and community projects, each rooted in craft, context, and collaboration. We are a small, highly engaged team that values curiosity, integrity, and design excellence. We believe great projects come from strong relationships, open dialogue, and a shared commitment to doing meaningful work in an inspiring setting.

The Role

Weโ€™re seeking an experienced Interior Designer to lead and grow our interiors practice. This role is ideal for someone who combines creativity and collaboration with strong project management and client relationship skillsโ€”and who is excited to help shape how our studio delivers interiors services.

Youโ€™ll be responsible for developing and executing design concepts, sourcing materials and furnishings, and collaborating closely with our architectural team. Beyond design, this position plays a key role in refining our process, elevating client experience, and helping expand our interior design offerings.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the lead for interior design within the studio, guiding the vision and approach across residential and hospitality projects.
  • Lead interior design efforts from concept through installation, including space planning, material palettes, furniture selection, and styling direction.
  • Collaborate closely with architects and clients to ensure a cohesive, integrated architectural and interior design vision, blurring the boundaries between disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of interior construction drawings, specifications, and FF&E packages.
  • Perform construction administration to see design intent realized on-site.
  • Demonstrate an understanding ofโ€”or a strong desire to learn aboutโ€”furniture procurement, managing vendor and fabricator relationships.
  • Manage and organize the studioโ€™s materials library in collaboration with the design team.
  • Multi-task and manage deliverables efficiently across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Oversee interior design schedules and budgets in coordination with project teams.
  • Help shape, refine, and document the studioโ€™s interior design processes, standards, and client offerings.
  • Represent the studio confidently in client presentations, design reviews, and meetings, providing exceptional service.
  • Contribute to business development efforts, proposals, and marketing initiatives to help grow the interiors portfolio
Qualifications
  • Accredited degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in interior design, ideally within high-end residential or boutique hospitality.
  • NCIDQ Certification preferred (or in progress)
  • Strong conceptual design skills and a keen eye for materiality, color, and detail.
  • Experience managing interiors projects and client relationships from concept to completion.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to balance creativity with organization and follow-through.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach and enthusiasm for helping shape a growing design practice.
  • Proficiency with Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
Why Join Us
  • Work in a close-knit, creative studio where design excellence and collaboration drive every project.
  • Be part of a team designing spaces deeply connected to craft, community, and landscape.
  • Enjoy life in Leavenworthโ€”where trails, rivers, and mountains are part of daily life and inspiration.
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and flexibility for occasional remote work.
Salary Range
  • The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $90,000. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
Benefits
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and sick time
  • SIMPLE IRA plan with up to 3% employer match
  • Health and dental insurance
  • Professional development reimbursement program
  • Discressionary yearly bonus
