Outstanding project management, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you navigate complex stakeholder relationships and technical challenges. These skills ensure safe, timely, and regulatory-compliant integration of energy projects into power grids, supporting grid reliability and project success.

What is a senior interconnection engineer?

Senior Interconnection Engineers are experienced professionals who design, evaluate, and manage the electrical interconnection of large-scale energy projects—such as solar, wind, or battery storage systems—to the utility grid. They are responsible for ensuring that projects meet all technical, regulatory, and safety requirements for grid connection. Their role involves coordinating with utilities, conducting power system studies, overseeing the application process, and resolving technical challenges that arise during interconnection. Senior Interconnection Engineers often serve as technical leads, mentoring junior engineers and interfacing with project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

Job description

Your role

This is a high-impact, customer-facing technical leadership role supporting Digital Realty’s largest and most strategic customers. You will own the technical relationship across the full lifecycle of an opportunity — from discovery and solution design through contracting and deployment — acting as the primary liaison between customers and internal teams.

You’ll play a critical role in driving customer success by translating business and technical requirements into engineered solutions, ensuring opportunities progress smoothly while delivering a best-in-class customer experience.

What you’ll do
  • Lead technical engagement with customers, including site tours, sales calls, solution design, pricing support, and contract negotiations
  • Act as the central hub for technical and engineering communications across internal and external stakeholders
  • Discover and evaluate customer requirements, designing fit-for-purpose data center solutions
  • Engineer and cost solutions for large, complex customer opportunities
  • Own and complete technical responses for RFIs, RFPs, and RFQs
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on data center infrastructure, building systems, and white‑space fit‑outs
  • Partner with Design & Construction, Operations, Implementation, and Portfolio teams to support project delivery
  • Support technical account planning, pipeline reviews, and sales forecasting
  • Represent Digital Realty at industry events and technical forums

Monitor industry trends and provide insights to support strategic customer accounts

What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s degree required in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field

  • Hands‑on, in‑field experience in the data center industry supporting infrastructure such as:
    • Electrical / power systems or
    • Mechanical / cooling systems
  • Pre‑sales experience is required (Sales Engineering / Solutions Engineering preferred)
    • Does not need to be a quota‑carrying salesperson
    • Must be comfortable working closely with sales teams and engaging directly with customers in a client‑facing, pre‑sales capacity
  • 5+ years with a data center or colocation provider OR 8+ years in a related field (telecom, networking, engineering consulting, mission‑critical facilities)
  • Proven ability to engage directly with customers and translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration across engineering, construction, operations, and commercial teams
  • Technical expertise in at least one area: networking, electrical systems, cooling systems, monitoring & controls, or mission‑critical infrastructure
  • Experience supporting technical sales cycles and managing customer opportunities
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including engagement with senior stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
