Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. \r\n**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations** \r\n

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification\r\nexists is to perform highly skilled technical work in the installation, repair,\r\nand maintenance of the City of Montgomery's electronic traffic control devices\r\nand computerized control and communication systems. Work\r\nrequires a broad range of electronics technical knowledge and is performed with\r\nconsiderable independence of judgment. Primary work responsibilities may\r\ninclude: monitoring traffic from the Traffic\r\nManagement Center (TMC); installing and programming electronic traffic\r\ncontrol devices and supporting equipment; responding to service requests and\r\ncalls; and performing diagnostic checks and repairs to electronic traffic\r\ncontrol devices, fiber optic cables, and supporting equipment. The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Electronic Technician I is distinguished from\r\nthe ITS Electronic Technician II in that the ITS Electronic Technician II serves as the lead worker\r\nonsite and typically performs more complex technical duties. The ITS Electronic Technician I receives technical guidance from the ITS Electronic Technician II and\r\nreceives supervision from the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Manager.\r\n

Minimum Qualifications

An\r\nAssociate's degree in Electronics, Electronic Technology, Computer Science,\r\nIntelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), or a closely related field and one\r\n(1) year of experience in electronics, or electrical systems, with a strong\r\nfocus on the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of traffic signal\r\nsystems to include basic network switches, fiber optic patch panels, and\r\ncabling for network devices, AC/DC electrical experience and the ability to\r\ntroubleshoot circuits using multimeters or other test equipment, familiarity with Cat5/Cat6 and COAX cable\r\nterminations and testing, as well as a thorough knowledge of current desktop\r\ntechnologies, serial communications, and TCP/IP concepts, is essential. \r\nNOTE: Qualifying education, training, and\r\nexperience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to\r\nperform the job will be considered.\r\n

Special Requirements

Must possess, or be able to obtain within two\r\nyears of employment, a Traffic Signals Level 1 Certification from the IMSA\r\n(International Municipal Signal Association). Must possess a valid Alabama\r\ndriver's license and insurable driving record as needed to operate City\r\nvehicles. Must be able to attend\r\nspecialized training or classes as needed to maintain or increase skills and\r\nupdate equipment. Must be willing to be\r\non call for 24 hours a day/seven days a week at least once a month.\r\n\r\n\r\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:\r\n\r\n\r\nPhysical\r\nability to lift from 50 to 150 pounds (assisted or unassisted) such as the\r\ntraffic controller cabinet. Physical ability to stand,\r\nstoop, bend and crouch as needed to make repairs, replacements or adjustments\r\nto equipment. Physical ability to distinguish\r\nbetween colors as needed to differentiate between color-coded wires and signal\r\nlights in order to make repairs.\r\n\r\n\r\nWORKING CONDITIONS:\r\n\r\n\r\nWork\r\nis performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not\r\nlimited to at heights up to 50 feet above ground, in unkempt areas with tall\r\nweeds and exposure to local wildlife, and in close proximity to heavy traffic\r\ntraveling at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour. Work is performed in a variety\r\nof weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heat,\r\ncold, rain, and lightning. Work will require some overtime, night, weekend, and\r\nholiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.\r\n\r\n
