What does a senior instrument engineer do?

A Senior Instrument Engineer is responsible for designing, specifying, installing, and maintaining instrumentation and control systems used in industrial processes. They ensure that these systems function efficiently, safely, and reliably to monitor and control variables such as pressure, temperature, and flow. Senior Instrument Engineers often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. They also collaborate with other engineering disciplines to optimize process performance and comply with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior instrument engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Instrument Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering (often electrical, instrumentation, or control engineering) and extensive experience with instrumentation design, installation, and maintenance. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as PLCs, DCS, CAD software, and familiarity with relevant codes and certifications like ISA or IEC are essential. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help coordinate teams and interface with other engineering disciplines. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of complex industrial processes.

What are some common challenges faced by senior instrument engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Senior Instrument Engineers often encounter challenges coordinating with other engineering disciplines, such as process, electrical, and mechanical teams, to ensure instrumentation specifications align with overall project requirements. Integrating new instrumentation technologies into existing systems while maintaining compliance with safety and industry standards can also be demanding. Effective communication, strong project management skills, and adaptability are essential to successfully navigate these complexities and ensure project deliverables are met on time and within budget.

Job description

Sr Software Engineer, LCP

We are Lennar

Lennar is a leading homebuilder focused on creating extraordinary experiences for Homeowners, Communities, and Associates. We are a Fortune 500 company consistently ranked among the top homebuilders in the United States.

A Career that Empowers You to Build Your Future

The Sr Software Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager. You will lead the design, development, and evolution of enterprise-grade applications, integrations, and MCP servers. This role requires a hands-on leader to deliver scalable, secure, and business-aligned AI infrastructure on AWS.

Your Responsibilities on the Team

  • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of full-stack systems using TypeScript/React and Go.
  • Drive your team's adoption of legal, compliance, and procurement platform capabilities - IDP templates (e.g., Backstage), shared CI/CD pipelines, and Terraform modules - and establish team standards on top of them.
  • Partner with central platform teams: provide feedback, influence roadmaps, and contribute improvements to shared templates and modules where appropriate.
  • Lead the development of agentic and AI product capabilities - AI agents, MCP servers, and LLM-powered features - ideally leveraging AWS Bedrock, Claude, and OpenAI.
  • Own production readiness for your team's services: observability, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Mentor and develop engineers through design reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
  • Partner with product stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Deploy infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Instrument observability using OpenTelemetry tracing and structured JSON logging.
  • Conduct technical design reviews and architecture governance.
  • Transfer knowledge to the platform team through live sessions and documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including ownership of production systems at scale.
  • Expert-level proficiency in TypeScript and React, and strong backend experience with Go.
  • Deep understanding of system design, API architecture, security, and performance optimization.
  • Proven success operating in a DevOps/self-service environment where product teams own their infrastructure and delivery pipelines.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership: driving projects end-to-end, setting standards, and mentoring engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with ServiceNow, Legal, Compliance and Procurement systems/applications
  • Deep CI/CD expertise (GitHub Actions or similar) - highly preferred.
  • Strong infrastructure-as-code expertise (Terraform or similar) - highly preferred.
  • Experience self-serving through internal developer portals such as Backstage (golden paths, software templates, service catalogs).
  • Production experience building agentic/AI systems (AI agents, MCP servers, LLM applications); hands-on AWS Bedrock experience is a strong differentiator.
  • Python Mastery: 5+ years of production Python using async frameworks like FastAPI or Starlette.
  • TypeScript/React and Go
  • AWS Infrastructure: Deep knowledge of IAM role chaining, Secrets Manager, ECR, and VPC networking.
  • AI & Agentic Systems: Hands-on experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and AWS Bedrock AgentCore.
  • Identity & Security: Advanced OAuth 2.0/OIDC execution, including On-Behalf-Of flows and JWT validation.
  • Platform Engineering: Experience authoring Spotify Backstage templates and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines.
  • Enterprise Integration: Proven history of integrating complex REST APIs such as Workday, Salesforce, or ServiceNow.
