The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Otolaryngology has an exciting opportunity for a full time Sr. Hearing Instrument Specialist to work in Miami, FL. The Sr. Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) is responsible for the identification and rehabilitation of hearing impairment including determining the appropriateness and benefit of amplification, as well as providing basic audiometric testing with mastery of related processes, optimal customer service, and the management and development of the HIS team. The Sr. Hearing Instrument Specialist counsel's patients regarding test results
and reviews options which best meet their hearing care needs, at an expert level. In addition, the incumbent performs hearing aid testing, selection, and fitting to all populations. The Sr. Hearing Instrument Specialist reviews pricing and sale of hearing aids as part of the patient education process and is involved in price setting in the hearing aid practice in addition to performing assigned administrative tasks related to the practice.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Conducts air and bone conduction threshold measurements; utilizes pure tone masking procedures in conducting tone decay testing and Speech Discrimination (SD) tests; and obtains Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT).
2. Establishes Most Comfortable Listening Level (MCL) and determines Uncomfortable Listening Level (UCL/LDL).
3. Utilizes speech masking and performs tympanometry; obtains acoustic reflexes ipsilaterally and
contralaterally.
4. Operates the audiometer and utilizes otoacoustic emission equipment (OAE). Coordinates and interprets test results.
5. Completes patient chart notes and sends written report to referring and primary care physicians.
6. Counsel's patients regarding test results; provides hearing aid candidates with education materials and scheduling information; makes recommendations regarding hearing care options; and sells appropriate hearing care products and warranties.
7. Provides hearing aid dispensing, including selection, fitting, ear-mold acoustics, ongoing management with follow-up, education, and patient training on device use and care.
8. Conducts real-ear measurements; performs functional gain testing; and performs correct programming, modifications, and acoustical adjustments. Performs hearing aid checks, cleaning, and repairs.
9. Demonstrates and sells Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), batteries, and other special products.
10. Manages and oversees the hearing aid device inventory and queue for all patient populations.
11. Assesses clinical quality outcomes, including efficiency and productivity.
12. Provides excellent customer service and maintains good public relations. Ensures confidentiality to maintain compliance with all HIPAA regulations.
13. Participates in training sessions to remain up to date with and share knowledge of new hearing assistance devices.
14. Collaborates with HA Center leadership to strategize on price-setting.
15. Trains and develops HIS staff; provides input on the management of the HIS practice and team.
16. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
Valid State of Florida Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) license required

  • Provides hearing aid dispensing, including selection, fitting, ear-mold acoustics, ongoing management with follow-up, and education
  • Demonstrates and sells Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), batteries, and other special products
  • Follows correct and timely fitting protocols
  • Conducts real-ear measurements
  • Performs functional gain testing
  • Demonstrates sound field measurement procedures
  • Performs correct programming, modifications, and acoustical adjustments
  • Provides insertion and removal practice and training for patients
  • Provides instructions on the care and use of the hearing instruments
  • Provides instructions on Bluetooth connectivity and use of wireless accessories
  • Performs hearing aid repairs
  • Performs hearing aid checks and cleaning
  • Supervise the appropriate management of the hearing aid device queue for all patient populations
  • Daily monitoring of device status across all satellites
  • Directing hearing aid support staff to resolve any device related issues
  • Utilize colored dot system to manage device procurement
  • Queue should be checked a minimum of two weeks before patient appointment
  • Assists patients with exchanges or returns as needed
  • Involved in clinical quality outcomes, including efficiency and productivity
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains good public relations
  • Performs all other miscellaneous duties as assigned
  • Practices good safety and infection control habits
  • Exercises confidentiality to ensure compliance with all HIPAA regulations
