About Hanson
Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a highly motivated Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Market team. This leadership role offers the opportunity to serve as a technical expert and project leader on complex transportation, site development, water resources, railroad, and infrastructure projects throughout the Midwest and across Hanson markets.
The ideal candidate will bring advanced geotechnical engineering expertise, strong project management capabilities, and a passion for mentoring technical staff while delivering innovative, practical, and cost-effective solutions to clients.
Position Summary
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will lead and oversee geotechnical investigations, engineering analyses, design recommendations, and construction support services for a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects. You will play a key role in business development, client relationship management, technical quality assurance, and staff development while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Lead planning, execution, and quality control of complex geotechnical investigations, including subsurface exploration programs, laboratory testing, and geotechnical evaluations.
  • Serve as the geotechnical technical lead for major transportation, railroad, water resource, facilities, and site development projects.
  • Perform and review advanced geotechnical analyses including:
    • Foundation design and evaluation
    • Slope stability assessments
    • Settlement and consolidation analyses
    • Earth retention system design
    • Ground improvement recommendations
    • Pavement design evaluations
    • Seepage and embankment analyses
  • Develop innovative geotechnical solutions that balance technical, economic, environmental, and constructability considerations.
  • Review and approve technical reports, calculations, specifications, and engineering recommendations.

Project Management
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery within budget, schedule, and quality expectations.
  • Develop scopes of work, cost estimates, project schedules, and staffing plans.
  • Coordinate geotechnical activities with civil, structural, environmental, water resources, and transportation engineering teams.
  • Provide construction-phase support, including field observations, contractor communication, design clarifications, and issue resolution.
  • Identify project risks and proactively develop mitigation strategies.

Client Development & Business Growth
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Lead client meetings, presentations, and technical discussions.
  • Support business development initiatives, including proposal preparation, interviews, and pursuit strategies.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with public agencies, municipalities, transportation departments, rail clients, and private-sector organizations.
  • Identify opportunities for expanding geotechnical services within existing and new markets.

Leadership & Mentorship
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, engineers-in-training, and technical staff.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to project teams across multiple offices.
  • Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and professional development efforts.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, innovation, and best practices throughout the organization.
  • Support Hanson's commitment to technical excellence, safety, sustainability, and client satisfaction.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required.

Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex geotechnical projects for transportation, rail, site development, water/wastewater, or public infrastructure clients.
  • Proven track record managing multidisciplinary engineering projects and client relationships.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring technical staff.

Licensure
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.
  • Geotechnical Engineering (GE) license or board certification preferred where applicable.

Technical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in geotechnical software including GeoStudio, PLAXIS, LPILE, SLIDE, gINT, or similar platforms.
  • Extensive knowledge of geotechnical site investigation methods and laboratory testing standards.
  • Strong understanding of soil-structure interaction, deep and shallow foundations, retaining structures, embankments, and earthwork design.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA, AREMA, USACE, and relevant state DOT design standards.
  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
