What is a senior infrastructure engineer?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing an organization’s core technology infrastructure. This includes servers, networks, cloud environments, and related systems that support business operations. They often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of the infrastructure. In addition to technical expertise, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to align technology with business goals.

What are some common challenges faced by senior infrastructure engineers when supporting large-scale systems?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability of systems, managing complex migrations, and optimizing performance under heavy workloads. Coordinating with development and security teams is essential to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting services. Additionally, staying ahead of evolving technologies and automating routine tasks can be demanding but crucial for efficiency and scalability. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and effective cross-team communication.

Our core values guide how we serve customers and support one another:

  • Proactive Ingenuity
  • Positive Team Harmony
  • Relentless Commitment
  • Trusted Reliability

Role Summary

This is not a siloed “stay in your lane” engineering role.

The Network & Infrastructure Engineer will work in a fast-moving, customer-facing environment supporting networks, firewalls, wireless, servers, virtualization platforms, cloud infrastructure, and data center projects. No two days look the same. One day may involve deploying switches and wireless at a school district; the next may require troubleshooting a VMware, Nutanix, Azure, or Proxmox environment, assisting with a firewall cutover, or helping resolve a critical customer issue.

The right person is technically curious, dependable under pressure, communicates clearly, and takes pride in figuring things out. You should be comfortable rolling up your sleeves, wearing multiple hats, and stepping into the technical challenge in front of you.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who wants broad exposure, real responsibility, customer interaction, and a clear path to grow into a senior infrastructure, solutions, or technical leadership role.

Key Responsibilities

Network Infrastructure Implementation & Support

  • Configure, deploy, document, and troubleshoot switching environments across client networks.
  • Support LAN, WAN, VLAN, routing, segmentation, QoS, and multi-site network environments.
  • Configure and troubleshoot firewall environments, including security policies, NAT, VPNs, remote access, site-to-site connectivity, and security rule management.
  • Deploy and support wired and wireless infrastructure, including access points, controllers, SSIDs, guest access, wireless security, and Wi-Fi performance optimization.
  • Assist with network refreshes, new-site deployments, E-Rate projects, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
  • Perform onsite troubleshooting, testing, cutovers, and validation during customer implementations.

Virtualization, Server & Data Center Support

  • Troubleshoot and support virtual environments, including VMware, Nutanix, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox, Azure, and other hypervisor or cloud platforms.
  • Assist with virtual machine provisioning, performance troubleshooting, networking issues, storage connectivity, backups, snapshots, and recovery-related tasks.
  • Support server infrastructure, including Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file services, and related networking components.
  • Assist with data center modernization projects involving compute, storage, virtualization, backup, disaster recovery, and cloud connectivity.
  • Work with senior engineers and vendor partners on escalations involving complex infrastructure issues.
  • Help identify root causes, document findings, and recommend practical corrective actions.

Client-Facing Technical Execution

  • Serve as a trusted technical resource for K–12, government, higher education, and commercial clients.
  • Travel to client sites for implementations, troubleshooting, project work, assessments, and escalations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide customers with clear status updates, expectations, and next steps during projects and support engagements.
  • Represent SureLock professionally and help build customer confidence that SureLock has their back.

Operational Excellence

  • Maintain accurate documentation, including network diagrams, IP schemes, configurations, passwords, asset information, and project notes.
  • Follow established project, service, change-management, and escalation processes.
  • Contribute to process improvements as SureLock continues to scale its engineering and managed services operations.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Project Management, Service Delivery, Engineering, and vendor partners.
  • Take ownership of assigned work and follow through until issues are resolved or properly escalated.

Technical Qualifications

Required

  • Strong hands-on experience supporting network switching environments.
  • Experience with firewalls, VPNs, wireless infrastructure, and general network troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, routing, and network segmentation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot infrastructure issues methodically across networking, servers, virtual machines, storage, and cloud environments.
  • Experience supporting or troubleshooting at least one virtualization platform, such as VMware, Nutanix, Hyper-V, Proxmox, or Azure.
  • Strong customer-service mindset and ability to communicate clearly with customers.
  • Willingness to work onsite full-time in Buford and travel to customer locations as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced services environment.

Strongly Preferred

  • MSP, IT consulting, or fast-paced IT services experience.
  • Cisco networking experience, including Catalyst switching, Meraki, or other enterprise network platforms.
  • Nutanix, VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox, Azure, or hybrid-cloud experience.
  • Experience with Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, Meraki, SonicWall, or similar firewall platforms.
  • Experience with Aruba, Juniper Mist, Cisco Meraki, Ruckus, or other enterprise wireless environments.
  • Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Azure AD/Entra ID, or identity-management experience.
  • Backup and disaster-recovery exposure, including Rubrik, Veeam, Cohesity, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting multi-site K–12, municipal, government, or commercial environments.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, Network+, Fortinet NSE/FCP, Nutanix NCA/NCP, VMware VCP, Microsoft Azure, or similar credentials.

What Makes This Role Compelling

  • Broad Technical Exposure: Networking, firewalls, wireless, virtualization, cloud, servers, storage, backup, and data center projects.
  • Variety of Customers: Work with school districts, local governments, higher education, and commercial organizations.
  • Real Growth Opportunity: Build the experience and reputation needed to advance quickly into senior engineering or solutions architecture roles.
  • Certification Support: SureLock invests in training, certifications, and technical development.
  • High-Impact Work: You will see the direct results of your work in the customer environments you support.
  • Strong Team Environment: You will work alongside experienced engineers, sales professionals, and vendor partners who solve meaningful problems together.
  • Recognition for Performance: Exceptional work, ownership, and customer service are noticed and rewarded.

Ideal Candidate Profile

You likely:

  • Thrive in a fast-moving environment where every day is different.
  • Enjoy troubleshooting and do not stop at the first roadblock.
  • Take ownership rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem.
  • Can move comfortably between networking, servers, virtualization, cloud, and customer communication.
  • Want to grow your career, not simply hold a job.
  • Take pride in being dependable, professional, and technically strong.
  • Understand that urgency, communication, and follow-through matter just as much as technical skill.

If you want to become a go-to infrastructure engineer, work on meaningful customer projects, and grow alongside a company that is building something special, we would love to hear from you.
