What is a senior infrastructure engineer?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing an organization’s core technology infrastructure. This includes servers, networks, cloud environments, and related systems that support business operations. They often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of the infrastructure. In addition to technical expertise, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to align technology with business goals.

What is the difference between Senior Infrastructure Engineer vs Network Engineer?

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications, Senior Infrastructure Engineers focus on overall infrastructure design and cloud integration, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network hardware and connectivity. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is broader, often overseeing multiple systems, while Network Engineers concentrate on network-specific tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior infrastructure engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in network architecture, server management, cloud platforms, and a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is typical in this role. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership, and effective communication help you manage complex projects and collaborate across teams. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and scalable IT environments that support organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by senior infrastructure engineers when supporting large-scale systems?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability of systems, managing complex migrations, and optimizing performance under heavy workloads. Coordinating with development and security teams is essential to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting services. Additionally, staying ahead of evolving technologies and automating routine tasks can be demanding but crucial for efficiency and scalability. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and effective cross-team communication.

Octane is unlocking the power of financial products for merchants and consumers. Our cutting-edge technology and innovative financial products empower businesses with more control and flexibility, enabling them to deliver seamless digital experiences, drive customer loyalty, and build long-term value.

Octane supports merchants throughout the sales cycle: connecting dealerships with high-intent buyers, driving transparent, fast, and easy closings with award-winning technology, and providing on-going customer care with superior loan servicing.

We are seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to automate, stabilize, and secure our cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will modernize and manage core platforms, spanning AWS cloud resources, zero trust network architectures, identity governance via Okta, and endpoint systems, using advanced Infrastructure as Code practices. You will drive continuous integration and deployment automation, eliminate manual operational toil through custom tooling, and enforce production grade observability and incident response standards across the enterprise.

This role requires extensive experience in cloud platform, site reliability, or infrastructure engineering backed by strong expertise in AWS, Kubernetes, identity platforms, and automated deployment pipelines. The ideal candidate blends deep technical mastery with strong project management, consensus building, and communication skills to navigate complex priorities independently.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain infrastructure-as-code (Terraform and AWS CDK) for AWS cloud resources — VPCs, compute (EC2/ECS), load balancers, RDS/Aurora, IAM policies, and security groups.
  • Develop and maintain Terraform modules and automation pipelines for corporate IT infrastructure platforms including Okta, ZScaler, MDM, and EDR.
  • Build CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployments — every change goes through version control, code review, and automated validation before reaching production.
  • Write automation tooling in Python and/or Go to eliminate manual operational toil across both cloud and corporate infrastructure.
  • Design, architect, and support resilient infrastructure hosting Octane’s applications while balancing simplicity with scalability.
  • Implement and maintain configuration-as-code practices for identity governance, access policies, network configurations, and endpoint management policies.
  • Engineer and codify identity and access management (Okta) and IGA platforms, including — lifecycle automation, governance workflows, SSO/SAML integrations, and Terraform-managed configurations with respect to AWS IAM.
  • Own zero-trust network architecture (ZScaler/SASE) — policy-as-code, service edge infrastructure, and integration with cloud networking.
  • Build and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability for infrastructure systems.
  • Participate in incident response and on-call for infrastructure-related outages; conduct blameless postmortems and drive follow-through on corrective actions.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, site reliability engineering, or cloud platform engineering.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Sciences, telecommunications, or computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Security Specialty) preferred.
  • Industry certifications such as CISM, Microsoft IAAA, CIAM, CISSP, and Okta Certified Administrator are a plus, but not required.
  • Strong proficiency in Terraform and/or AWS CDK for module development, state management, and automated deployment workflows.
  • Deep hands-on experience with core AWS services (VPC, IAM, EC2/ECS, RDS, S3, CloudWatch) and managing Kubernetes clusters (EKS).
  • Experience automating identity lifecycles, SSO/SAML, and identity as code using Okta, Azure AD, or similar platforms.
  • Proven skills in build automation (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD), networking fundamentals, and zero trust platforms like ZScaler.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and solve complex analytical problems with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of building consensus and explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Compensation

In addition to salary, Total Rewards include a stock option package, and benefits as outlined below. The role described above offers a base salary of $130,000 to $170,000. Your offer will be based on location, the alignment of your qualifications with the requirements of the job and internal equity.

Benefits:

  • Robust Health Care Plans (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Generous Parental Leave
  • Flexible Time-Off (FTO)
  • Retirement Plan (401k) with company match!
  • Educational Assistance/Tuition Reimbursement up to $3K/year
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Short Term / Long Term Disability
  • Robust Ancillary benefits including accident insurance, hospital insurance, etc
  • Wellhub (Gympass) Wellness Benefit
