The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Accounting, this role is accountable for ensuring the reliable, timely and accurate reporting of Trading results.

The Senior Financial Analyst will be involved in the monthly/quarterly GL close and management reporting activities to ensure accurate and timely reporting of the results to operations leadership and Corporate reporting teams. The focus will be trade validation, profitability, inventory accounting, GL close, intercompany reconciliations, facilitation with forecasting/budgeting, external reporting processes and other related activities.

This job is accountable and responsible for maintaining a strict level of confidentiality relative to compensation matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Trade Validation: Review and reconcile trade data between systems; resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate accounting treatment.
  • Inventory accounting: Reconcile physical and system inventory to GL; investigate variances and support valuation. Perform inventory accounting using LIFO and weighted average costing. Perform lower cost or market assessment for inventory
  • Profitability Analysis: Validate P&L and analyze margins, drivers, and trading performance. Perform bridge assessment between MTM performance and accounting results
  • Business Analysis: Perform variance and trend analysis; provide insights on historical results and key drivers.
  • Intercompany Reconciliations: Reconcile balances and transactions across entities; resolve mismatches.
  • GL Close: Support month- and quarter-end close, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • External Reporting: Assist with financial disclosures, audits, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Derivatives Validation: Review MTM valuations and validate gains/losses; ensure proper accounting treatment.
  • Lease accounting: Perform accounting for operational leases
  • Accounting assessment: Perform accounting assessments under US GAAP for physical and non-financial agreements and transactions
  • FP&A Support: Provide inputs for forecasting and budgeting; support variance analysis and scenario modeling.
  • Cross team collaboration: Collaborate with Front Office, Scheduling and Risk teams on trading activity
  • Business Partnering: Collaborate with trading, risk, and operations; deliver financial insights.
  • SOX compliance: Execute relevant business process controls and retain control evidence to meet annual SOX requirement
  • Process Improvements: Enhance controls, streamline processes, and support automation initiatives.
  • SQL experience: SQL knowledge is preferred

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting with 5+ years of operations accounting, preferably in commodity trading organizations
  • Good knowledge of the commodity trading business
  • Good knowledge of Allegro (or similar ETRM systems) and Great Plains is considered an asset
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of SQL and data language models is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills to validate and challenge information by various sources
  • Strong project management and team skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Strong skills related to execution and implementation of process changes
  • Must be a team player with the ability to work independently and be accountable for results
  • Possess the capacity to listen / consult / advise and provide solutions for a variety of stakeholders who may have concurrent or competing priorities
  • Willingness to work 5 days in the downtown Calgary office
  • Resiliency in dealing with issues
  • High degree of attention to detail and organization
