Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Technical Engineer manages multiple complex engineering projects for commercial clients, overseeing technical design, project execution, and cross-functional coordination from concept through construction completion. This role is responsible for establishing project budgets, defining scopes of work, managing schedules, and ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.

The Senior Technical Engineer serves as a trusted advisor to clients, providing senior-level technical consultation and leading multidisciplinary teams through design, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities. In addition to project leadership, this role mentors junior engineers and serves as a key resource for technical guidance, problem-solving, and continuous improvement initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Leadership & Client Engagement

  • Manage multiple concurrent engineering projects from planning and design through construction and project closeout.

  • Establish project budgets, scopes of work, schedules, resource requirements, and execution plans.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients requiring senior-level technical consultation and project support.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while identifying opportunities for additional services and project enhancements.

  • Monitor project performance to ensure adherence to budget, schedule, quality, and client expectations.

  • Lead project meetings, coordinate stakeholder communications, and provide regular project status updates.

Engineering Design & Technical Oversight

  • Lead the design, coordination, and review of building systems, including refrigeration, HVAC, energy management systems (EMS), and related mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

  • Develop engineering plans, specifications, calculations, equipment selections, and system layouts.

  • Prepare and review engineering drawings utilizing AutoCAD and other design platforms.

  • Coordinate designs with architectural, engineering, construction, facilities, and operations teams.

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, company requirements, and client specifications.

  • Provide technical leadership throughout design development, construction, commissioning, and system optimization activities.

Construction & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate construction activities and resolve field issues during project execution.

  • Review installation quality, workmanship, and compliance with project specifications.

  • Prepare bid packages and technical documentation for construction and procurement activities.

  • Select and manage contractors, consultants, and vendors for assigned projects.

  • Evaluate contractor and vendor performance related to quality, cost, safety, and schedule.

  • Conduct site visits and provide technical support during installation, startup, and commissioning activities.

Equipment Procurement & Technology Evaluation

  • Review, specify, and approve equipment selections for engineering projects.

  • Coordinate equipment procurement activities and support purchasing processes.

  • Resolve equipment quality, delivery, startup, and performance issues.

  • Research, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies that improve reliability, energy efficiency, sustainability, maintainability, and lifecycle cost.

  • Assess new equipment, vendors, contractors, and service providers for operational and financial value.

  • Collaborate with manufacturers and suppliers to develop solutions that meet performance and business objectives.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor, train, and support the professional development of junior engineers and technical staff.

  • Provide technical guidance and project oversight to engineering team members.

  • Serve as an escalation point for technical and project-related issue resolution.

  • Foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.

  • Monitor team projects to ensure compliance with budgets, schedules, and quality standards.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in departmental planning, forecasting, and workload management.

  • Support development and standardization of engineering processes, specifications, and best practices.

  • Participate in strategic initiatives related to technology adoption, operational improvements, and sustainability.

  • Develop and maintain technical standards, documentation, and engineering procedures.

  • Represent the organization in client meetings, vendor discussions, and industry engagements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

  • Minimum of 7 years of engineering, design, construction, facilities, or related technical experience.

  • Experience managing complex technical projects from design through implementation.

  • Strong knowledge of commercial building systems, including refrigeration, HVAC, energy management systems (EMS), and related infrastructure.

  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and engineering design tools.

  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Bluebeam, and project collaboration platforms.

  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and project management experience.

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 25%.

  • Remote option if outside of commutable distance to Burlington, MA office.
