About the role
We are seeking a US Deputy Health Editor to join the team. Suitable candidates must have at least five years' previous experience at a national news outlet. The individual should be able to demonstrate an impressive track record of finding and breaking exclusive health stories of national and global interest.
Main Responsibilities
Include, but not limited to:
  • Find and pitch exclusive content
  • Identify important breaking and trending news
  • Write and edit to extremely tight deadlines
  • Edit our Health channel page
  • Plan and develop long-term stories and projects
  • Manage pool of freelance writers
  • Edit weekend content when necessary
  • Oversee the Health team when the Editor is away

Person Specification
A strong track record of news gathering, editing, and managing a team is essential, together with an understanding of digital 24-hour news and the processes and pressures that come with operating in this environment.
Outstanding candidates should also be able to demonstrate their ability to balance editorial objectives in a fast-paced news environment.
Other key requirements include:
  • Ability to read complex scientific papers, understand them enough to turn it into engaging copy, and pick out important caveats that need to be addressed
  • Ability to produce breaking news stories with speed and accuracy
  • Possessing strong news and journalism ethics judgment
  • Being a self-starter with the ability to work independently when necessary
  • A solid contacts book, full of experts from different medical fields who can assist in answering queries and providing reaction
  • Knowledge of medical matters and conditions
  • Competent at sifting through raw data and spreadsheets to produce engaging numbers-led stories
  • Ability to work self-sufficiently, generate own health stories and contribute newsworthy stories to the daily news list
  • Ability to write strong first drafts that are informative, intelligible, engaging and accurate
  • Ability to monitor analytics and adjusting strategy as needed to optimize KPIs that will include converting new subscribers and engaging current ones
  • Ability to write moving real-life features
  • Capability to write and edit in a pressurized environment.
  • Applicable knowledge of multiplatform news gathering tools and resources.
  • Must have a strong passion for finding the most interesting information to surface for our readership.
  • Strong communication skills to direct and work collaboratively with a global team of editorial executives and co-workers
  • Ability to mentor and lead junior and senior reporters
