Position Overview

As a Sr. Fiber Optics Field Technician, you'll play a crucial role in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks that power homes, businesses, and industries. What You'll Do
  • Safely perform work in communications and energized spaces
  • Participate in work requiring pole climbing and an elevated position in a bucket truck
  • Lead cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing
  • Proficiently work with and calibrate fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.
  • Perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services
  • Troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues to include advanced OTDR testing, reporting, and troubleshooting
  • Complete documentation to include record-keeping, billing, inventory, etc.
  • Generate trace reports and SEP (splice engineering package) files
  • Calculate fiber optic facility attenuation budget
  • Responsible for leading, mentoring, and training field staff and multiple crews

Working Conditions
  • Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel
  • Climb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spaces
  • Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions
  • Able to walk long distances
  • Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance

What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferred
  • Mastery of Field Technician II Job Duties
    • Safely Perform work in communications spaces
    • Qualify to work safely in energized spaces
    • Participate in work requiring pole climbing when necessary
    • Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set)
    • Perform work from an elevated position in the bucket truck
    • Assist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install new Provide safety spotting and roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification
    • Manage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections
    • Perform minor field repairs on equipment
    • Perform cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing
    • Stay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber optics
    • Proficiently work with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.
    • Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables
    • Perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services
    • Read and understand manufacturer manuals and proficiently perform standards for operating, installing, and repairing electronic equipment, product, and components
    • Troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues to include OTDR testing, reporting, and troubleshooting
    • Install demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipment
    • Route premise cable both inside and outside of facilities
    • Calibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturer's instructions
    • Coordinate fiber activities with other disciplines and departments as necessary
    • Assist with training and mentorship of lesser experienced technicians
    • Monitor and maintain min/max truck stock materials
    • Responsible for completing time and material (T&M) documentation
    • Complete documentation to include record-keeping, billing, inventory, etc.
    • Complete daily close of business (COB) reports for customers
    • Suggest and execute corrective actions to address problems affecting any fiber or fiber related equipment
    • Generate trace reports and SEP (splice engineering package) files
    • Assist with 3rd party optical ground wire (OPGW) installation oversight
    • Splice and place optical ground wire (OPGW)
    • Lead and mentor less experienced coworkers
    • Lead team members as required in the absence of a Sr. Technician or Manager
  • Valid Driver's License is required
  • Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes
  • Possess Underground Miner Card
  • Proficient with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, man lift, cable puller, and reel stands
  • Proficient in operating small equipment (i.e., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)
  • Flagger Certification
  • Ability to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams
