Job Description:

We are seeking a Director, Private Fixed Income to join the Corporate Private Placement team in Wellesley, MA, contributing to the investment grade portfolio objectives of the Private Fixed Income (PFI) group at SLC Management.

SLC's Private Fixed Income group is one of the largest investment grade private debt investors in North America. The team is responsible for the investment management of over $41 billion of private debt, invested and managed on behalf of Sun Life Financial's balance sheet and a growing third-party client base. The cross-border team of more than 50 investment professionals is organized across three verticals: Corporate Credit, Infrastructure Debt, and Structured Credit. The PFI team has an annual investment program in excess of $8 billion.

PFI holdings are comprised of high-quality, investment grade transactions that are highly negotiated and customized, enabling SLC to achieve yields in excess of comparably rated public securities. The breadth and depth of Sun Life's private fixed income portfolio provide the organization with a meaningful competitive advantage. The PFI team's investment philosophy, disciplined approach, collaborative culture, and deep expertise have enabled it to achieve a leading market position.

Our ideal candidate will contribute immediately to the continued growth of the Corporate Private Placement team's business through a focus on origination, strong credit underwriting, and portfolio management. Natural leadership skills and the ability to work independently while thriving in a team environment are key attributes for success. This role requires strong financial statement analysis and investment analysis skills to support management of the PFI portfolio through the underwriting of new investment opportunities and the monitoring of existing private debt investments.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Originate new investment opportunities within the investment grade market; primarily corporate private placement transactions

  • Prepare detailed investment memos through strong credit underwriting, detailed financial modeling and analysis

  • Develop detailed written annual reviews, financial analysis, models and amortization schedules

  • Credit rating analysis through peer comparables and credit risk scorecards

  • Prepare management reports on the status and performance of the portfolio

  • Evaluate potential investments for portfolio suitability by conducting company and industry research, credit and relative value comparable analysis, due diligence

  • Determine whether the risk-return profile is acceptable through credit and pricing comparable analysis

  • Negotiate deal bidding and legal documentation on behalf of clients

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • 3-7 years of relevant post-undergraduate work experience

  • Progress towards, or completion of CFA designation is a plus

  • Strong written skills as evidenced by professional experience

  • Investment and accounting proficiency as evidenced by professional experience

  • Understanding of the fundamental principles of debt and equity markets and instruments

  • Ability to analyze financial statements, calculate a broad range of financial ratios and interpret/communicate results

  • Detailed knowledge of Microsoft applications, proficient use of Bloomberg and Capital IQ

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and eager to take on responsibility

  • Comfortable interacting and leading discussion with senior leaders

  • Established organizational abilities and time management skills with ability to multitask

  • Advanced problem solving and conceptual thinking skills

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Exceptional credit underwriting capabilities including rating analysis, financial modeling, and risk/return assessment and legal structure understanding

  • Demonstrated relationship-building and negotiation skill through outreach to banks, brokers, borrowers, rating agencies and other institutional investment peers

  • Detail-oriented portfolio management skills including experience with consents, quarterly and annual investment monitoring, and credit ratings

  • Contribute to New Business Volume targets by sourcing, analyzing and structuring investment opportunities that demonstrate an acceptable risk/return relationship

  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional presentation, with demonstrated leadership capabilities, and the ability to network within the organization and broader private placement market
