What is a senior firmware engineer?

Senior Firmware Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that enables hardware devices to function correctly. They typically work with embedded systems, programming microcontrollers or processors using languages like C or C++. In addition to writing and debugging code, they often lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate closely with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal device performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Firmware Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded systems, strong coding skills in C/C++ or similar languages, and a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies ensure robust firmware development, seamless hardware-software integration, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the most common challenges faced by senior firmware engineers when collaborating with hardware teams?

Senior Firmware Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components. One common challenge is managing communication gaps due to differing technical languages and priorities between software and hardware disciplines. Additionally, hardware prototypes may evolve rapidly, requiring firmware engineers to adapt code frequently, troubleshoot unexpected behavior, and adjust to shifting specifications. Building strong cross-functional relationships and maintaining clear, frequent communication helps address these challenges and ensures project success.

How much money does a senior firmware engineer make?

A senior firmware engineer typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often work with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and programming languages like C and C++.

What does a senior firmware engineer do?

A senior firmware engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software that controls hardware devices. They often work with embedded systems, use programming languages like C or C++, and collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper functionality and performance. This role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and experience with debugging tools and real-time operating systems.

Job Details

We are seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to design and build the embedded systems powering autonomous machines and fleet operations.

You will develop production-quality embedded C++ software that connects computing platforms to sensors, actuators, ECUs and safety systems. This position requires an engineer who can operate comfortably at the boundary between hardware and software and who understands that firmware ultimately determines how a physical machine behaves.

You will own systems from board bring-up and driver development through testing, deployment, observability and field troubleshooting.

What You Will Do
  • Design and implement firmware for a next-generation embedded hardware platform
  • Develop low-level drivers, hardware abstraction layers and system services
  • Build interfaces for sensors, actuators, ECUs and other machine components
  • Work with CAN, Ethernet, SPI, I²C, UART and other communication protocols
  • Develop deterministic real-time and near-real-time control paths
  • Write clean, efficient and testable embedded C++ code
  • Implement watchdogs, error handling and fail-safe behavior
  • Design firmware that remains reliable through hardware faults, communication loss and environmental variability
  • Build logging, tracing, telemetry and embedded diagnostic capabilities
  • Lead firmware bring-up for new boards, daughterboards and related hardware
  • Partner with electrical and mechanical engineers to validate designs and interfaces
  • Diagnose difficult issues spanning firmware, hardware and system integration
  • Perform root-cause analysis on failures found during testing or field deployment
  • Optimize timing, memory consumption and CPU utilization
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, regression testing and field validation
  • Improve firmware CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks and development workflows
  • Establish standards for firmware safety, reliability and maintainability
  • Mentor other engineers on embedded development and debugging practices
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of firmware or embedded-systems development experience
  • Strong embedded or systems-level C++ programming experience
  • Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers or embedded Linux systems
  • Experience with CAN, SPI, I²C, UART, Ethernet or similar interfaces
  • Strong debugging skills across hardware and software boundaries
  • Experience delivering production-quality firmware for real-world products
  • Understanding of reliability, failure modes and defensive system design
  • Ability to work effectively across firmware, hardware and mechanical engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with robotics, autonomous systems or heavy equipment
  • Experience developing safety-critical or real-time embedded systems
  • Familiarity with an RTOS or real-time scheduling concepts
  • Hardware bring-up and board-level debugging experience
  • Experience with bootloaders, OTA updates or secure firmware updates
  • Experience building embedded logging, tracing or telemetry systems
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing or automated hardware-validation experience
  • Experience supporting products deployed in unpredictable or physically demanding environments
  • Background improving firmware testing, CI/CD or release processes
