Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Delivery &

Position Summary

Serving as the ownerโ€™s technical lead for the medium- and high-voltage power that feeds data centers. This role focuses on extracting power from a site, generating it on-site where needed, and delivering it to the data center to support fast go-to-market execution. The scope includes utility interconnection, transmission and substation infrastructure, on-site generation, and the full MV/HV delivery chain up to the point of useโ€”rather than the critical power equipment inside the building. The engineer partners with development and acquisition teams during due diligence, owns design intent, directs Engineers of Record (EORs) and design consultants, leads equipment procurement, and provides hands-on field oversight through construction, commissioning, and energization. The mandate is speed to power: sequencing interconnection, generation, and delivery so megawatts are available to the data center as early as possible. This is a senior individual-contributor roleโ€”hands-on technical expert who leads through engineering authority rather than direct reports.

Core Functions
  • Lead electrical engineering decisions for the power feeding the data center across MV (typically 1โ€“35 kV) and HV/transmission (35 kV and above) systems, including utility interconnection, transmission, substations, switchgear, transformers, and delivery topology up to the point of use.
  • Develop and review single-line diagrams, design basis documents, equipment specifications, and key design deliverables for code compliance, constructability, and reliability.
  • Direct and oversee Engineers of Record (EORs) and third-party design firms; review and approve their work, resolve technical gaps, and hold partners accountable to schedule and quality.
  • Own equipment procurement for the power delivery and generation chain: write technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and select long-lead equipment (power transformers, MV/HV switchgear, generators, protective relays) to protect the critical path to energization.
  • Attend Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), factory tours, and equipment inspections to verify quality, performance, and compliance before shipment โ€” including periodic overseas travel for certain long-lead electrical equipment.
  • Support utility interconnection process & coordination.
  • Drive speed to power: own the power delivery critical path, sequence interconnection, on-site generation, and delivery infrastructureโ€”including bridging and interim power strategiesโ€”and manage milestones, long-lead procurement timing, and project-controls coordination to make megawatts available to the data center as early as possible and accelerate go-to-market.
  • Partner with development and acquisition teams during due diligence on prospective sites and propertiesโ€”assessing power availability, interconnection feasibility, existing infrastructure, and brownfield or redevelopment reuse potential to inform acquisition decisions.
  • Lead or review power system studiesโ€”load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and transient/stability analysisโ€”to validate delivery and generation design.
  • Develop and evaluate on-site and behind-the-meter power generation strategiesโ€”natural gas turbines and reciprocating engines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewables, and microgrid integrationโ€”spanning standby, prime, bridging, and primary generation, including islanding, paralleling, black-start, and grid-synchronization schemes.
  • Support cost and value on the power delivery and generation scope: lead value-engineering efforts and evaluate manufacturers and lead times.
  • Specify and coordinate protection and controls, SCADA, and utility-grade metering for the delivery and generation systems, including protective relaying schemes, telemetry, and revenue metering.
  • Design for maintainability and operability, and support the handoff to operationsโ€”coordinating O&M requirements, spare-parts strategy, and as-built documentation for long-term reliability.
  • Provide field engineering support during construction, commissioning, energization, and troubleshooting of energized systems. Act as a technical authority during incident recovery procedures and root cause analysis (RCA) reporting.
Core Competencies
  • Deep expertise in MV and HV power system design and operation, including substation design (AIS/GIS), power transformers, switchgear, and protective relaying.
  • Strong command of power delivery reliability and redundancy models (N+1, 2N, 2N+1) applied to interconnection, substation, and generation infrastructure, and an understanding of how upstream power delivery supports data center availability targets (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier standards).
  • Proven equipment procurement and vendor management capability, from specification through factory testing and delivery.
  • In-depth knowledge of utility interconnection โ€” ISO/RTO queue processes, interconnection studies (feasibility, system impact, facilities), interconnection agreements, network upgrades, and transmission/distribution service.
  • On-site and behind-the-meter generation experience โ€” gas turbines, reciprocating engines, BESS, renewables, and microgrids โ€” including paralleling, islanding, black-start, and grid synchronization.
  • Commercial and cost acumen โ€” CapEx budgeting and estimating, value engineering, manufacturer and lead-time evaluation, and total-cost/life-cycle trade-off analysis.
  • Familiarity with protection and controls, SCADA, and utility-grade metering, and with designing for operability and O&M handoff.
  • Familiarity with reports from power system analysis software (ETAP, SKM Power*Tools, or EasyPower) and design tools (AutoCAD/Revit).
  • Fluency in applicable codes and standards (NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NESC, IEEE, ANSI C84.1, IEC).
  • Field and construction experience, including commissioning and energization of MV/HV equipment.
  • Brownfield or redevelopment expertise โ€” assessing, repurposing, and upgrading existing electrical infrastructure on previously developed, industrial, or retired power generation and substation sites.
  • Sound engineering judgment, risk assessment, and clear communication; able to manage multiple projects and external partners concurrently.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (or equivalent practical experience); Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical power systems, with a demonstrated focus on MV/HV, substations, power generation and power delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience making engineering decisions and overseeing EORs / design consultants and equipment procurement, with strong emphasis placed on proven hands-on capability.
  • Field experience is highly desired; the strongest candidates bring hands-on field experience in power delivery on power plants or substations, including commissioning, energization, and construction support of energized systems.
  • Brownfield or redevelopment experience repurposing or upgrading existing infrastructure and previously developed sites.
  • Background in data center, utility, mission-critical, or heavy industrial power environments.
  • Direct experience navigating utility interconnection โ€” ISO/RTO queues, interconnection studies, and interconnection/transmission agreements.
  • Experience with on-site or behind-the-meter generation (gas turbines, reciprocating engines, BESS, renewables, or microgrids) is strongly preferred.
  • Track record of cost ownership and value engineering โ€” budgeting, manufacturer and lead-time evaluation, and total-cost trade-off analysis on major electrical scopes.
  • Based in West Palm Beach, FL, with willingness to travel up to ~50% โ€” including periodic overseas travel for Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and equipment inspections.
