JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Environmental Engineer serves as a strategic technical leader responsible for the oversight and execution of environmental compliance, permitting, and sustainability programs. This role involves managing complex regulatory requirements at the local, state, and federal levels, specifically as they relate to mining, aggregates, asphalt, and building materials production.

You will act as a primary liaison between operations and regulatory agencies, ensuring that all sites within your district operate within the law while minimizing their environmental footprint. The position requires a high degree of independence, a proactive 'self-starter' mindset, and the ability to provide technical mentorship to junior staff and production teams.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer the full lifecycle of environmental permits (Air Quality, NPDES, Water Rights, US Army Corps, Wetlands, and Endangered Species).
  • Lead the development and implementation of critical environmental plans, including SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans) and SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure).
  • Manage the timely submission of all regulatory reports, including Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) and annual emissions inventories.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with local, state, and federal regulators; represent the company at public hearings and permit actions.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and recordkeeping reviews to identify potential risks.
  • Provide hands-on guidance to Plant Managers and Production staff on best practices for water discharge, oil storage, and waste management.
  • Serve as a technical lead for environmental incidents, ensuring proper reporting, remediation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Assist in property acquisitions and divestitures by managing Phase I/II environmental investigations and overseeing remediation contractors.
  • Coordinate with land management teams to ensure mining reclamation activities meet permit requirements and long-term sustainability goals.
  • Identify and implement innovative engineering solutions to improve air/water quality and reduce resource consumption.
  • Develop and deliver environmental training programs for site personnel to foster a culture of shared responsibility.
  • Actively promote and adhere to Martin Marietta's world-class safety standards, ensuring all environmental activities are performed without risk to personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related STEM field.

Work Experience

5+ years of experience in Environmental Compliance, preferably within the Aggregates, Mining, or Heavy Construction Industries.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry, and dusty ;Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
