What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

What is the difference between Senior Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectSenior EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering; often a master's; professional engineering license (PE) preferredBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; PE license optional but advantageous
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, project management; leadership rolesDesign, analysis, testing, manufacturing
Industry UsageUsed across engineering sectors for experienced professionalsEntry to mid-level engineering roles in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace

Senior Engineers typically have more experience, leadership responsibilities, and advanced credentials compared to Mechanical Engineers. While Mechanical Engineers focus on design and analysis, Senior Engineers often oversee projects and mentor teams, making them suitable for higher-level roles within engineering teams.

Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer - Embedded Systems
SharkNinja | Needham, MA | Onsite 5 days/week

About SharkNinja

We build products people reach for every day, with a purpose to positively impact lives in homes around the world. That happens through relentless innovation, obsessive attention to quality, and a culture where every voice matters. If you want to build the next big thing and grow while doing it, you'll fit right in.

About the Role

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for a senior engineer who wants real ownership. You'll drive embedded electronics design - hardware and firmware - across the full product development lifecycle, from concept through production, defining the architecture rather than inheriting someone else's. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams globally (US, China, and beyond), work directly with contract manufacturers, and serve as the go-to technical authority on electrical and firmware decisions for your programs.

What You'll Do

Lead embedded electronic design from concept to production, covering schematic capture, PCB layout, and firmware (C/ASM). Define product electrical and firmware architecture as the technical foundation for global teams and contract manufacturing partners, and coordinate day-to-day engineering work to hit prototype milestones for internal reviews and research programs. Partner with Engineering and Product Marketing on EBOM cost estimates and effort assessments for new initiatives, and own compliance by working with the compliance team to meet global certification standards. Develop clear hardware and firmware specifications, lead EMI/EMC and compliance issue resolution through rigorous root cause analysis, report program status to global EE leadership, and mentor junior engineers to raise the technical bar across the team.

What You'll Bring

Required:

BS or MS in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience) and 5+ years designing embedded hardware and firmware through full product development cycles, with a proven ability to design electronics from scratch rather than adapt existing designs.

Experience in component selection, system architecture, design verification, and documentation, plus firmware development for microcontrollers (design, test, debug).

Familiarity with DFM, DFT, and reliability principles, along with EMI/EMC troubleshooting and compliance resolution experience.

Strong communication skills for presenting technical decisions to cross-functional and global audiences, and the self-direction to manage your own priorities in a fast-moving environment.

Nice to have: consumer product or consumer goods consulting experience; familiarity with compilers, IDEs, JIRA, and SVN; experience in distributed, multi-site engineering teams.

Why SharkNinja

We move fast and build things people actually use. You'll be surrounded by engineers who push you to be better - and if you want a role where you leave your fingerprints on products used by millions, this is it.
