What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

Employment Type: Full-Time
For over 70 years Fishbeck has been building. As a 100% employee-owned firm, every team member has a stake in what we build together—our work, our reputation, and our future. Now we need to add a Senior Construction Engineer to help us keep building.
Working with our Civil Field team, you will oversee reconstruction on various road projects and manage project budgets and compliance.
What You’ll Do
  • Oversee the administration and coordination of multiple highway and bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction projects.
  • Ensure contractor compliance with contract documents and project specifications.
  • Plan and lead project meetings, including pre-construction, progress, HMA/concrete pre-production, and public meetings. Prepare and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Supervise engineers and technicians in inspection, administration, and documentation from pre-bid to contract close-out.
  • Manage project pay estimates, contract modifications, work orders, and supporting documentation.
  • Review and validate work produced by the project oversight team in the field and office.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex assignments and mentor junior staff.
  • Interpret and apply contract documents to address unforeseen project challenges.
  • Monitor staff performance to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, local agencies, and the general public.
  • Advise clients on project status, issues, and solutions.
  • Review and respond to contractor correspondence and claims.
  • Track and manage project budgets, ensuring timely communication of any financial concerns.
  • Contribute to business development efforts and support company growth initiatives.
  • Manage internal project budgets for services contracts.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Michigan (required).
  • 10+ years of experience in MDOT, heavy highway, and/or bridge construction.
  • Prior experience as a Project Engineer or Assistant Project Engineer overseeing and administering road/bridge construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation engineering from design through final construction.
  • Proven project management skills, with experience handling projects from local streets to complex urban freeways and structures.
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions and foster strong partnerships.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and professional problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated team leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.
What We Offer
Our staff members enjoy a comprehensive compensation package that includes:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Wellness reimbursement and activities
  • Reimbursement and support for tuition, continuing education, and professional/personal development
  • Vacation and sick time, volunteer PTO, parental leave, and paid holidays
  • Opportunities for hybrid and flexible schedules
  • 401(k), profit sharing, and stock ownership opportunities (employee ownership)
  • And more!
We are an equal-opportunity employer that is committed to diversity. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or veteran status.
