What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Staff Software Developer to lead the development and optimization of our TrendAI Vision One. • Design and architect robust, scalable software systems for TrendAI Vision One, aligning with business goals and performance metrics.
  • Develop and implement critical software components and systems, focusing on quality and scalability.
  • Mentor other engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and AI-augmented ways of working.
  • Collaborate with product management, UX/UI designers, SRE, and other stakeholders to refine project specifications and convert them into actionable plans.
  • Analyze and optimize systems to ensure performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Oversee the development of infrastructure as code, ensuring robust, scalable, and secure deployments.
  • Conduct code reviews and establish standards for code quality, documentation, testing, and maintenance practices.
  • Address complex troubleshooting and debugging tasks, providing strategic solutions and improvements to prevent future issues.
  • Engage in strategic discussions to enhance product development processes and implement best practices across the organization, particularly in collaboration with the SRE team to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to support critical system issues, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Champion AI-augmented SDLC practices across the team, embedding AI tooling and spec-driven development approaches throughout the entire software development lifecycle - from requirements and architecture through to testing, review, and deployment.
  • Encourage continuous learning within the team, promoting the adoption of new technologies and methodologies to stay ahead of industry trends.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of experience in software development with a strong track record in architectural design and system optimization.
  • Expertise in backend development with proficiency in Go, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar languages.
  • Extensive experience with microservices, event-driven architectures, and REST APIs in a cloud-native environment, with strong preference for AWS.
  • Demonstrated capability in leading projects and making critical software engineering decisions.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles, advanced design patterns, and best practices.
  • Strong skills in mentoring engineers.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, capable of working effectively across different teams and disciplines, including close collaboration with SRE teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with AI-augmented SDLC - including spec-driven development, AI-assisted architecture and design, automated test generation, and AI-integrated code review workflows. The ideal candidate has fundamentally shifted their development mental model to leverage AI throughout the entire software lifecycle, not just as a productivity tool but as a core part of how software is conceived, specified, built, and validated.
  • A continuous learning mindset with a passion for tracking industry trends and leveraging emerging technologies.
